Re: Wow I wont be buying a cobalt!
Doesn't a seatbelt do most of the protecting anyway? Weren't air bags just the result of airheads who wouldn't use the seatbelt anyway?

Think you answered your own question - very, very, very...........very quick. Urban Legend - um maybe. I'm pretty sure that they are "1 way" style switches & I'm positive that they are not "Buttons" would that ever happen? I've seen stranger things with cars but I would say no. |
Re: Wow I wont be buying a cobalt!
I have heard that some of the early 90's chrysler cars had a problem with the tranny suddenly locking up in pretty extreme circuimstaces and setting off the bags, don't know if that is true but I guess if it caused the velocity to change rapidly enough it would set them off, I bet that would make you $hit yourself!

Re: Wow I wont be buying a cobalt!
Forget all the talk about airbags, etc! Ive had better looking things come out of my A$$ than GM has produced recently!!!!

Re: Wow I wont be buying a cobalt!
Older airbags could be deployed by lifting the back of a car sufficiently. Newer ones won't do that.
The sensor switches are supposed to be sensitive to a *sharp* deceleration (e.g. several "g" forces in a very short time) so severe inclines and hard braking should not set them off. Many impacts might not either, particularly if you are in the more massive vehicle. There is no magic to impact. When two systems of force (your cars) are joined into a single system (they colide) all of the force attempts to equalize. Just like water flowing downhill; the system having the greater force (mass * acceleration) transfers energy to the system having the lesser force. Acceleration being equal; Suburbans allways win vs. Corollas. A Suburban striking a Corolla may easily deflect the Corolla so violently that the Suburban never experiances that *sharp* acelleration needed to trip the airbag sensors. It's the same principal that makes it possible for people to put their fists through stacks of bricks. |
Re: Wow I wont be buying a cobalt!
Yeah.....er, what he said. The Corolla looked like a taco and the passengers side of the car was non-existant, but I seem to rememeber feeling the sensation of doing a faceplant on my ballsack as my head whipped forward (major neck strain, 2 yrs later I still have crippling migrains) So yeah, the coralla parted like the red sea, but the impact was not lessened. I still came to a pretty immediate deceleration. Yes I had my seatbelt on and the bags keep you from planting your face forward as the seatbelts allow you to move forward before the lock and your neck is like a wet piece of spahgetti at speed with a sudden stop (remember earnhardt?)
