Re: swimming in a sea of choices.. (engine choices)
so, I am pretty set on a 5.3/4L60E combo from SPS, sounds a killer deal at right around $5k
But has anyone installed an LS1 or an LS2? a 400hp LS2 would be just about perfect, and they have one available with a GTO 6-speed for $8k!!! (but alas, i think the 6-speed might be a real PIA and I dont want to cut up the truck anyway. |

Is the SPS all brand new parts? If not, you can do much better price wise. A used 5.3 and 4l60e can be had for under $1500 complete. Then depending on what else is needed, if anything, your looking at about $100 for a programmed PCM and about $3-500 for a ready to go harness if the motor didn't come with one. The 6.0's can be had for about the same, throw a small cam in and your at 400hp easy.

working in a driveline shop, alot of the hotrod ls/manual trans guys are having trans problems, and have you ever put a cluch in one you wouldnt mind an auto, they seem to last quite a bit longer. no shock load, but not as much fun.

Either the wrecking yard or just watch Craigslist for even better deals. I paid $1800 for my 6.0L/4L80e/NP-241 combo complete with everthing. I just picked up another complete ( minus harness and pcm ) 6.0L a few months ago for $500 and a 4L60E for $400, there going in a 57' Nash Metropolitan for my wife.
brad man 72: what are your customers doing to there T-56's to break them? What problems are you seeing? A few years I was heavily into drag racing with an 01' WS6 making 750hp. Daily driven with nothing upgraded tranny wise but the clutch. All my buddies with 4L60E's were constantly breaking with much less power. Just curious... |
