Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap
Oh, got more parts in too. The fuel line adapters ended up being too shallow to work so I'm sending them back and getting the crimp fittings or maybe seeing if a hydraulic shop can make me some adapters.

Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap
So I was gonna try to paint a little but rain got me. nothing beats aluminum foil for quickly masking off big stuff.
http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/...psdlp6edyl.jpg http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/...pshcvt3ll6.jpg also got my fuel lines today. gonna start measuring and making them up this weekend. still havent mounted my tank yet but Im gonna need my welder buddy for that and hes in florida right now till tuesday. :( http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/...psqkitmogq.jpg |
Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap
I got a ton of the same parts you have. What are you using to assemble the -AN fittings to the braided hose

Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap

Thankfully the new stove-top and wall oven haven't arrived yet, lol. Still have to modify the cabinet doors above the fridge for the smaller cabinets. |
Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap
Did get a little done yesterday though.
Finished painting my throttle body. looks good as new http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/...psrk26mbuq.jpg Painted valve covers...first coat after two coats of primer http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/...psdtooeinn.jpg After three coats of low gloss black and back on engine. also started taping engine up for paint . was going to do it today but its raining. http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/...psc459uuvv.jpg |
Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap
So I've got three broken exhaust manifold bolts to get out. So far I've broken four drill bits and a bolt extractor. :( Im not sure what to do now. Im gonna try to get my welder buddy over here this week I guess.
http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/...psawh0cp5a.jpg My cheap ebay headers got here too. they dont look to bad actually. Nice thick flanges too. Hopefully theyll fit and get me going for awhile till I can get afford some full length headers later on. http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/...psvmh2tdn4.jpg http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/...pskcw6nxqn.jpg http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/...psgtkwkwhn.jpg |

Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap
Consider me jelly! For the guys with 86 models, is the aux tank switch system (switch, harness, switching valve) just a plug and play with electric pumps and 87 tanks?
|
Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap
Did you get the exhaust bolts out? I had one that was broken. Weld a nut on it and turn slowly until it's out. I had to do it about 5 times before getting it out. Aluminum heads are nice in that the weld wont stick to them :D

Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap
You can get a dryer cord from home depot and a 6-50 NEMA plug and make a short adapter cord. Just make sure your breaker is able to handle his welder.

Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap
Check out the last few pages of my build thread. The cheap eBay headers look the same as the ones I got from Amazon for 105 shipped. Don't fit unless you cut the passenger's side frame rail a bit.

Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap
Went gun and purse shopping with the wifey today so no real progress made. She's in bed now so I'm out in the garage cleaning up some parts.

http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2lt48keq.jpg Also just picked up a 2001 4L80e for $500!!! http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7qgjwrvc.jpg Aaaaaand......found yet another use for my engine hoist,lol http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/...psvpvkjrze.jpg |
Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap
On the 4l80, how far should the slip you me go into the tail shaft? I ask because I need to order a yoke but they make the yokes in like four different lengths so I'm confused as to which one to order. Help please!
|
Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap
Got these cool adapters for the 4l80 to convert to AN-6 for my custom transmission lines Im gonna make.
http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/...psrzykzs7j.jpg Also my buddy was teaching me to tig weld. This was my third try...not to bad for a newby? http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/...psxeirxhs9.jpg |
Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap
Figuring up my budget. I set a $5000 cap when I first started and wifey agreed to it. This is what I've spent to date and all I have left to buy is a few more AN fittings since I've decided to make my trans lines out of braided hose, a drive-shaft, and Ill have to get a new exhaust system because I refuse to hook this new engine to my rusted out flowmasters, lol. I should be waaaaay under my original budget! especially if you factor in the sale of my old drive-train for $450, and some other parts Ill be selling soon. The stuff with the 0 next to it is stuff that was either optional or that could have been done alot more cheaply. For example, you don't have to clean and paint everything. I could have spent about $40 less on regular fuel line instead of the braided, if I wouldn't have taken everything apart to paint, I wouldn't have needed all the gaskets....stuff like that.
http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/...psajehrs9l.jpg Im going to redo all this in WORD later for those that want to know what this swap cost. It should also be noted that I had more than one oportunity to purchase a complete 5.3 pullout with ALL accesories including the airbox, MAF,TAC harness and transmission for around the same price that I payed for this 6.0 that came with none of that. So I could have shaved around $1000 off this list if I just would have went for the 5.3 swap. |

I just did my hydroboost, fuel to carb and trans lines with those AN fittings. Opens up all sorts of options for lines...

Wish I could just find a cheap driveshaft out of a silverado so I'd have the exact yoke I need. All these options are confusing the crap out of me! |

Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap
Ya ..Keep up the good work. Cant wait to get started on mine.
Are you going to go with the catch can? I have a 6.0 in my 2004 work van and it does suck quite a bit of oil into the throttle body. (345,000 miles) |

Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap
No it's a slip yoke. Looks just like the tail housing on a short tail th400 and the trans is two inches shorter than the th375 it replaced so I'm pretty sure I'll need a new driveshaft. thanks for the info, I'll contact them after I get the drivetrain set in and am able to take some measurements.

Re: Project "Steppin Wolf" LS swap
My mistake on the headers. That's what I get for doing a quick glance. Oh well. Still a very nice little build you have going on here.
As for the transmission, why did you go with the 80? Do you plan to add a power adder down the road? Or just looking at it from a stock vs stock the 60/65 wouldn't have been enough? Or maybe for 500 you just couldn't pass it up? Just wondering. |
