Speakers

Because of the small amounts of space in our trucks I was wondering where you guys put your speakers. I am looking at putting one 3'' approx in each door vent. How do you guys that have them in your doors run the wires to the doors. Any pictures of speaker setups would be great. Thanks

Brainchild 11-18-2004 03:03 AM

I have a pair of 6x9s in the floor in enclosures, and a 10" sub under the seat.

2low72 11-18-2004 04:10 AM

I have 2 6x9's in the door then some tweets in the air vents....

If your going to cut your doors and install speakers you will want to get waterproof backers to enclose speakers back side and attach them to the inside of door with silicone around outer edge to waterproof them otherwise when it rains water will run down glass and enter the door then drip on your speakers and you'll end up replacing them every year or 2 when the speakers paper breaks down.
Pioneer sells speakers in angled cases I believe are called TSX-11 that fit great under the front edge of seat, or can be set right on top the dash due to the angle on backside of speaker they rest comfortably against the glass with front edge even with dash pad and if you route the wires through original speaker grill and leave them extra long when you go camping, fishing , etc.... you can then grab the speakers from off dash or under the seat and set them on the outside of the truck for better musical enjoyment outside the cab.
There are also several speakers available to upgrade the stock one in the stock mounting location. You can find those here
http://www.gmcpauls.com/stereo_equipment1.htm
You will also find on that page kick panels that accept speakers up to 6" in diameter that can be installed so you don't have to cut up your doors.

Two 6X9s in the Lower Door, Two 6"ers in the Kick panel speaker housings I got from Paul, Two 8" subs in housings behind the seats where the Gas tank used to be, And two tweeters on the dash. But I'm contemplating the Piller Housings for them..

Not to bust up the thread, but does anybody have any pics or ideas on putting speakers in the kick panels?

thanks

On my 68 I used to own, I cut the old original speaker frame and mounted 2 4inch speakers in it and mounted in the original location.

GreyHoundSteve 11-18-2004 10:17 AM

I have 4 alpine 5 1/4 components. 2 are mounted in the door panel and 2 are in the kick panel. Im going to do some subs where the gas tank use to be. The door panels are still being molded so i probably wont have pic's for a week or so.

sneakysnake 11-18-2004 11:13 AM

Ive had them in the doors. And in the space between the back glass and door
(right in your ear).under the seat, in the lower cab corners.

You can make your own custom kick panels....

I had some kick panels made for mine. I also had speaker panels made for behind the seat.

GreyHoundSteve 11-18-2004 12:14 PM

Ive seen the kickpanels with speakers for sale by a few of the board vendors but i dont care for the looks of them. I had mine custom molded like the poster above.

Kick panel speakers. You can buy them with different brands of speakers in them, or without speakers altogether.

I haveMb quart 5 14 mids and tweets. mounted the mids in the doors, and Im reflecting the tweeters off the windshield, I should have mounted the tweeters way lower , because they don't image that well when the tweeter is so far away from the midbass, but I was thinking more on longgevity then soundquality when I mounted them. I also made two custom ported enclosures for AVI 6.5 inch subs that fit right under the bench seat, then I had an old school Kenwood 4 channel amp and a panasonic deck to run everything.

I loved mb quarts! I use to have 4 quarts 6 1/2 components and 3 jl w6 10"s in my supra and that system rocked. I was going to go with quarts again because they were so great but then i found out a friend of mine became an authorized Alpine dealer and i couldnt pass up his discounted prices. If i were going to pay retail or buy off ebay i would have gone with mb quarts. They make those components that mount the tweeter infront of the woofer on an arm and so you dont have the problem with the tweet mouting like you ran into.

Its NEVER a good idea to seperate your components by more than a few inches.

With my new Alpines i decided to only use 2 of the 4 tweeters because there so bright.

My cab is getting the metal work done today and the guys said it should be in paint no later than Wednesday and then i can begin to insolate and install most of the interior.

how about infinity? I am personaly a fan. My truck is curently running a pair of 6x9s in a console, but will be going with a set of kick panels and boxes behind the seat to put the speakers twards the top of the seat

Hooter 11-18-2004 05:02 PM

I love infinity too,we sell Infinity, JBL, Pioneer, MBquart, Pheonix gold, sony and alpine, and the infinity's are one of our best selling lines, plus I like the aimable tweeters on the coaxials. Are you going to move those 6x9's out of the console? because for imaging the best solution in these trucks for s.q is the kick panels, personally i find no point in having sound come from behind me, have good enough front speakers and you will never miss those back speakers

Super Duck 11-18-2004 05:29 PM

my friend and i messed around with speeker placement and came up with the best sound this way. that and i am tired of kicking them.

I have polk audio pro series in my home theatre and they rock but im not familiar with their mobile line. Polk is a big company so as a rule of thumb with large manufactures is that they make a budget line that usually sucks and a top of the line that usually rocks so i would get the #'s off those particular speakers and do a search and see what you can find.

68w/sbc406 11-18-2004 07:06 PM

I might spend alot of money on sterio equipment. . . IF I could figure out how to hear my exhaust through the speakers! :D

RON WOODGEARD 11-18-2004 08:10 PM

I have 6X9 MBQuarts in The door panels that I didn't have in when I took the Pictures. I still have the Blaupunkt 6" in the Kick Panels, But I will put MB Quarts in there also, and I'll put JL Subs instead of whatever I have now.. my Tweeters are Infinity, I will also change them over to MB Quarts..( I will go Components ) The 6X9s made a Tremendous Difference in the sound Quality.. I have had throughout the years, just about every Speaker made, The MBQuarts out do them hands down....

How do you get to the receiver cavity? Someone put a mid-90s cassette player in mine, so it's got a hole, but I don't know how to get it out and put my Alpine reciever in it.

Peregrine,

Most of the time, you have to remove the heater controls under the dash, ( see my picture, mine's out in it) There's two good sized Phillips head screws just under the dash to remove it. then depending on how the deck is in you can take it out from there. Some have a metal sleeve, ( your Alpine should, Mine does) It has metal tabs that spring out from the rear ( behind the dash) to hold the bracket in place, Bend them in even with the bracket while applying an even amount of pressure from the rear and when they release the whole unit will come out. The head may come out of the sleeve/bracket like the Alpine does also, then you can see easier how to release them.
If it's a deck made for the dash, Then there's no additional metal cut for the deck, There will be nuts behind the control knobs. Remove the knobs and you'll see them. Remove the nuts and look behind to see if someone put a brace bracket from the radio head to the dash or firewall.
