Work sucks.. any one else have a bad day!
So I get called in to an emergancy meeting this morning , upon arival I am greated by my boss with a sour look on his face. I asked what was going on and he procedes to tell me that he was instructed to lay me off:whine: :whine: . So I procided to start loading ( ok maby throughing) stuff into his truck that he requested back, including my laptop:whine: :whine: :whine: . So after the big smoky burn out out the parking lot and a few hours of updating my resume, I am now at the library using there computer looking for a new job. This sucks, my wife cant stop crying, Im mad but getting over it, except that 4 months ago I just bought a new truck for that job so now I have a $550. truck payment on top of it all!
I know that there are a lot worse things that can happen but man this sucks, the bad thing is I really liked that job. So if any one knows of somewhere that is hireing, Im lookin. I was most recently doing outside commercial sales for a construction supply company, I have also been a superintendant, and other forms of construction management. I have an automotive background as well, Sevice manager, writer, and was a shop forman for 4Wheel parts for about 4 years as well. If any one has any leads please let me know, before my kids dont have a home!!! Thanks all shawn |

Re: Work sucks.. any one else have a bad day!
Take a look at some of the Jobs with my employer. I've been with them 2-1/2 years now. Some of the usual corporate stupidity, but not too bad. The owner is directly involved with the company, will talk to any employee if they ask, & at least seems to give a hoot. And they have locations close to you!

I'd offer you a delivery job but youre a bit too far away, i cant imagine you'd want to move from beautiful colorado to this area. I wish i could help you, i really do. It will get better and in fact this layoff is a blessing for you, you will find something much better than you had.

Re: Work sucks.. any one else have a bad day!
The jobs listed are not all that might be available. Use your imagination and be flexible and you could fit in anywhere. If not with us here at Erickson, then someone out there will be glad to have you!!!
It is kind of a good feeling here at Erickson knowing that your work is helping save lives and property, not only here in USA, but around the world!! The top number No. 1 aerial fire fighting team in the whole world!! HOOOOOOOOOORRAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Re: Work sucks.. any one else have a bad day!
I don't suppose you have a degree in construction. A friend of mine was a construction foreman and has a degree in construction science. He is a safety engineer at SAIC working on big oil contracts.
And while you're on Craig's List, check out the job postings and consider posting a sanitized (no street address) version of your resume. I have found my last 2 jobs on Craig's List by emailing my resume with a short cover letter. |

Re: Work sucks.. any one else have a bad day!
Been there done that...got the T-shirt.
Was a VP of Ops for a company (venture capital funded) and they ran out of money...told me I could work for free. I opted to not work for free. Making $180,000 and then laid off...got some emergency jobs @ $10/hour stocking DVDs at Best Buy, Selling Qwest DSL and merchandising Carhartt apparel at a number of stores. Felt very humble to go from Exec to worker bee...had tons of thoughts like "I am more highly trained than this" etc for a while...but after a while felt OK...still had to eat. Check www.mosaic.com for some part time work. We were OK...because prior to being laid off I got out of debt ... www.daveramsey.com helped me prioritize my expenses and reduce about $95,000 of debt in about 18 months. He can also help out on the prioritization when one loses employment. Four Walls are most important. 1. Roof over head 2. Heat and utilities 3. Food and clothing 4. Transportation Everything else goes on the back burner and does not get a penny as long as you are in survival mode. It will amaze you how you can fend off creditors and how toothless their threats are and how much power you really have. Good luck...you will be OK. Hug your wife...she is scared right now and needs your support. Tim |
Re: Work sucks.. any one else have a bad day!
Oh yeah...I forgot.
www.48days.com 48 days to the work you love. Worked for me...now I work for me making a ton doing what I like to do. Tim |
Re: Work sucks.. any one else have a bad day!
Just keep in mind, everything happens for a reason. I know it pisses you off and it seems like everything is against you right now, but something will come your way. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Re: Work sucks.. any one else have a bad day!
Hope ya find employment soon, but being laid off isn't to bad.
I'm used to it though, since I get laid off every fall. Construction worker. LOL |
Re: Work sucks.. any one else have a bad day!
i know it sounds kinda lame, but you should definitely be entitled to unemployment. thats what its there for. and it really helps alot. good luck- things will brighten with a little time.

Re: Work sucks.. any one else have a bad day!
Sorry to hear of your situation skchevota, but I STRONGLY second timcos comments about Dave Ramsey. I work for a company that had two partners, one very much a mentor figure, the other pretty much just occupies space. The mentor partner came down with ALS and unfortunately doesn't have much more time with us. This really brought my life into perspective and I realized that without debt and with a little bit of an Emergency Fund...you have options.
I realize that's not much help for today, but keep your head up, keep looking for something and take some odd jobs until something comes along. Once you get back on your feet, check out www.daveramsey.com It'll change your way of life...if you work at it. It did for my family. Good luck |
Re: Work sucks.. any one else have a bad day!
hope you get a new job soon , im unemployed for 3 years now and after that sortah time its hard to find anny job and get back intoo the rithem of working again
4500 is a LOT you might want to look where to safe some cash i've allway's thought it was less expensive to live in the states oposed to live in europe . i spend 10 euro avarage a day tops for food fuel and clothes and about 950 euro a month for housing , car , car and health insurance and gas light water but than again i live on my own |
Re: Work sucks.. any one else have a bad day!
I didn't have as drastic a change as Timcos, but it was sort of the same deal. When the start-up I was working for burst with the rest of them I spent 6 months on the couch. I looked and applied everywhere and the market at the time was flooded with Software Engineers.
I picked up the paper and took a job at Anderson Towing. He figured out I was a bit brighter than most folks that worked for him, so I became the "special project". He taught me how to do accident recovery using a wench and the tricks to recovering rollovers and extraction from ditches and stuff. It was $10 + overtime, but I had a brand new $100k truck and I learned a lot. 6 months later I was back in the software world, but I learned a lot and it got me through one of the hardest times my family had to deal with. Good luck and keep us posted. Also try www.careerbuilder.com |
Re: Work sucks.. any one else have a bad day!
This has been an infomative thread for me. I'm making decent money but not in what I want to do and am trying to get into LE. Skchevota, keep your chin up!

Re: Work sucks.. any one else have a bad day!
Good luck on your job search. If you were a machinist I'd hire you today, but on the flip side, the construction industry is hot and heavy down here in SE Texas, you'd have to give up your beautiful mountains though. Good Luck!:)

Re: Work sucks.. any one else have a bad day!
Sounds like a great time to start your own business and be you own boss! It's better to own the corporate ladder rather than trying to climb it! Always a good idea to keep 3-6 months of emergency cash, or an open line of credit. Never know when the "big one" will hit ya!
Good luck on whichever direction you decide to take. If you have a passion, and are good at it, and can create value for others by doing it, GO FOR IT!!!!! That's what I am in the process of doing, and I am very happy so far, and it's only going to get better! |
Re: Work sucks.. any one else have a bad day!
Keep your head up and keep looking.

Re: Work sucks.. any one else have a bad day!
I work for a large construction firm from Greeley, CO which will remain nameless as I shouldn't be cruising this site on the job...but you probably know the yellow trucks since it's about 5 miles away. I don't pull enough weight to make a call and get you on right away, but if you pm me I can give you all of the contact info for the local projects (most Denver, Ft. Collins) Always looking for good foremen, Supt's, etc...
