Paint decision help

ok heres the scoop...im 17 years old..dad lost interest in truck couple years ago..i got a 1972 chevy..it needs new rockers.cab corners..bottom of the door needs cut out and new patch panels...and a little other rust issues on other places...no biggy they are small...ok i talked to a guy that owns a place called brians paint shop (its a body shop)...and i am in the thing called apprenticship or something like that...we are going to start restoring a 67 camaro ss monday... and im thinkin he will let me do some work on my truck....but after all this is done i want to paint it a different color...mines the two tone with the trim on top and bottom of truck....what would be a cool color...im thinking a dark metallic blue then have the white middle go down the side?? any body have some cool ideas..i also want to put some chrome on it as accents...and kinda on a budget too..

Re: Paint decision help

My suggestion is to work hard at the appreticeship.learning the skill will be a better investment than having a cool truck though if you work hard at the apprenticeship you will probably gain both.Bodywork can be traded for almost any other facet of truck building. If you have the chance learn to paint.Watch the vehicles coming thru the shop and see what you like.Build and paint the truck to suit you.Enjoy the ride.(Life should be about the journey not the destination)

You mentioned you're considering a dark blue metallic. My dad and I got our 74 Nova painted with this blue and I love it. Its from a Mini Cooper. Just giving you an idea...

Re: Paint decision help

My opinion is almost any factory color. 2 tones are perfect for '72s also, but if it's a longbed, you might want to only paint the top white as the horizontal lines tend to make them look even longer. Get it bullet straight, use base/clear, and buff it. Can't go wrong with a factory color, even if it's a highly modified truck.

Mines orange (not hugger) and white in the center :metal: blue would be kewl too...

Re: Paint decision help

dump as much money into it as you possibly can when your young and stupid like me... I watched my dad's project get put on the back burner for years when he had my brother, sister and I in the house to pay for. So I decided to get it done before any of that hits my wallet. Paint is still going to be the last thing I do, but get it done. MY vote is for blue and silver tho

Re: Paint decision help

Here`s what I do when it comes to color.I get everything done and ready for paint before deciding.I decide when it`s time to buy the paint.Of course I`m thinking like crazy the whole time before and while I`m doing the bodywork/build.I look at every color wondering how it would look.I always start with an idea, but let other options in.If you say, now, what color it`ll be most likely you`ll change your mind 10 times.Or,you`ll stick to the midnight blue and after you paint it find yourself wondering what your truck would look like this color or that.
Personally,I think the two-tone is a factory look that looks best in factory colors.I like solid paint when getting away from factory paint.

Re: Paint decision help

yeah your exactly right because today i was thinkin about yellow or red...im keeping the factory 2 tone though thats a must because my dad and i like two tone...but does the roof on the camaro looks like its gonna be a big job dont it

id say for now..work your balls off at the shop. if you got someone whos worth a damn at it thats willing to teach you. learn as much as you can. its a hard thing to come by these days. learn metal work and prep some body filler tech and how to lay some paint. youll beable to make a living off it latter. that pickup aint goin any where any time soon. learn the ish and work on the truck latter. i say keep it green!!.. and i thought that was a RS camaro cause the grill but im not an expert on em. good luck i hope it goes well for youj.

Re: Paint decision help

Looks like your going to stay busy with that car Tim. The spid is the paper that is on the glove box door. Your truck has one. Which one of the guys are working with you on the car? Your truck looks good with the green and white. Daren

Re: Paint decision help

The Camaro (if original) is an RS/SS. Super Sport was a performance package and Rally Sport was an appearance package. They are in no way related. There are SS cars with the standard grill and there are SS cars with the RS appearance package. Its the same with Z28 package as well. My dad had a std '69 Z28 and a '68 with a factory 250 L6/3 speed with the RS package when I was a kid.

dieselarmy13 06-06-2008 12:39 AM

Re: Paint decision help

RS was merely an apperance package that included the grill with hideaway's and other trim uprgrades. It could be had on an SS model, Making it an RS/SS. Definetly a sweet car. Someday I will have one. And a Chevelle. And a ....well you know.

67_C-30 06-06-2008 12:42 AM

Re: Paint decision help

BTW, the parking lights in the lower valance and the backup lights in rear valance are RS specific items too, so its probably original unless it was changed long ago.

Re: Paint decision help

it is a real rally sport for sure, i had a rs/ss a few years ago that i did a restoration on. as far as the ss goes, it appears that someone may have tried to make it into a ss. the ss emblems are not centered in the fender stripe. the ss should have a tach in the dash, and there should be a 12 bolt rear under the car. if it is a real ss/rs then the ss ebmlems, horn cap,gas cap will take presadence over rs emblems. ;)

tim21391 06-06-2008 08:19 PM

Re: Paint decision help

gas cap says ss 350..horn says ss 350..and i dont know if its originally a rs/ss the owner has had it from when he bought it brand new..i was like is it an rs/ss hes like straight ss...but im thinkin it really is an rs/ss...but yeah to the guy who aske dabout whose working on it with me....im the only guy working on it...sounds crazy right...hard to believe a 17 year old kid has done all that so far right??

but yeah ill take pics of my truck and put them on here under a different topic name though...it wont be of deconstruction yet because i dont have the funds to do it yet...but ill take pics of the way she sits with her rebuilt 402 and everything.....the camaro is a local sheriffs car so i think thats pretty sweet too.....

The 12 bolt rearend nor the tach and gauges were standard with the SS package. They were still options. However, most of them had those options. There's a guy here in town that has a factory '69 396 SS automatic with a bench seat a column shifter. It has no tach and (obvisously) no console gauges. It does have a 12 bolt and discs. 67-68 SS's didn't even come std with disc brakes, but they were std on '69 SS models.

It`s an RS/SS.Actually both were appearance packages. There were 6 cyl SSs,too. But,that`s a great car to restore.Definately primo material.

Not true. The standard engine in a '67 to '69 SS was a 350/295hp (300hp in '69). A big block 396 with either 325hp ('67-'69), 350hp ('68-'69) and 375hp ('67-'69). A first gen. SS either had a 350 or a 396 engine. There were first gen SS's produced with 6 cylinders, 283's, 307's, or even 327's. There were 6 cylinders put in early Chevy II's, but no 6 cylinder SS model was ever produced in Impalas, Chevelles or Camaros.
