My 1st truck pull

Haven't been on here for awhile and had to share my experience last night. I have had a 69 3/4 4x4 sitting around for awhile. I was going to sell it but didn't advertise that much. It's in good shape and decided that if it didn't sell by early summer I was going to hook it to the sled. Well, I finally had it ready for the local stock truck pull. I finished 3rd out of 14 trucks. I am stoked. Here is the video on youtube:metal:

Glad to see you are hooked now

Welcome to pulling! My '72 has been hooked to a sled probably more than 100 times. Hasn't seen a sled for years now though.

Alot of people don't see what fun comes from it. But if you have done it, you soon find out it is a rush no different than drag racing.

Especially since I built it with parts I had laying around. The truck has 4.56 gears a 4 speed and a front trac-loc and rear detroit locker. The motor is a mild 400 out of mommas 72 Blazer, (since I am finally rebuilding it for her.) I am extremely happy with the final outcome.

The general mindset to stick to is:

-If it breaks, it probably needed replaced anyway

-If it breaks again, don't replace it, upgrade it

-If you are not winning, put more money into it

-If you still can't win, put even more money into it

-If yet you still can't win, give up on your truck. Buy someone elses proven winner

- If you don't have the money to keep up with the winners, sit on the bench & watch like I do

Re: My 1st truck pull

I think we found the biggest problems. The bouncing was caused by the tire pressures LF had 19, RF 50, RR 21, LR 50. I'm lucky it didn't twist axles. The distributor was the cause of the bogging at first. I put an Accel distributor in it. Now I am in the process of putting weight between the frame rails from the radiator to the bumper. I am trying to have it ready for Vigo County fair in Terre Haute this Sunday.

Re: My 1st truck pull

Terre Haute is on. I will be there by 6 p.m. They said no gas class but I can still work the bugs out if it if I show up. I tweaked it a little with a new Accel distributor and a 670 Avenger carb. They said if enough trucks show up they will have a class.

Re: My 1st truck pull

Here is another video. This track was worse than the first one. I pulled 220 this time and the smart a$$ with a 2005 1 ton Chevy only pulled 170.

Congrat's Troy,

Once you Got it to Bite you really Did Good, What are u Running for Tire's? Did they Actually get a Enough for a Gas Class, Or was it all exibition Run's?

Good Job............

Rick

Re: My 1st truck pull

Just exibition. The problems I had at Danville are better now. I adjusted the valves again and noticed the lifters were bleeding off. If you compare videos the first turns more RPM's than at Terre Haute. That shows what a little difference in valve adjustment makes. I originally had them set at 1/4 turn after 0 lash. I then set them at 1/2 turn to get rid of lifter noise and lost 1000 RPM's. I have new lifters now but am thinking of putting a comparable solid lifter cam in it. My next pull is the 16th at Rockville Indiana. The tires were 33 12.50 16s. I just bought 245 75 16 for Rockville. They measure 30x 9.50. They are Cooper Discoverer STT's. They are shorter and narrower so I can take off in third instead of second so I can get track speed up. The family and I are having a blast doing this though. My wife gets as nervous as I do before my pulls plus she knows how competitive I am.:metal:

Re: My 1st truck pull

I'm not dissin, but 3rd isn't going to work. Way too high.

1st high is actually a little higher than 2nd low, but will tear out the transfer case coupler on a hard biting track if you have enough torque.

Troy-Built 07-09-2008 10:38 PM

Re: My 1st truck pull

I appreciate that. That's what happens when your new to the sport.

jeffspower 07-09-2008 10:51 PM

Re: My 1st truck pull

If you do run the shorter tires, 1st high might be worth a try. It usually takes at least a mild big block to tear out the coupler. Keep an eye out for a mid 80's 465/205 combo- they don't run a coupler. Super stout. Put a button clutch & 1-1/4" input shaft in & you should be good to about 700HP. But then you will need a 60 in the front...

It was easier on parts back when they ran mechanical sleds. Modern drag race sleds with grouser pans are hard on parts.

It's all for fun, and worth every penny

Troy-Built 07-09-2008 11:36 PM

Re: My 1st truck pull

You must have been reading my mind. I have already thought about building another mild 427 and putting one of my extra 60's under the front.

Re: My 1st truck pull

I will have a video later tonight. I put a solid lifter cam in it and went with stock 8 inch rims and factory hubcaps. I like the trad pattern on the Cooper tires. They ended up being the same height as the other set i had so I am going to stay in low range second gear.

Re: My 1st truck pull

I have 2 of em one with 4.56 trac loc and 1 with 4.11 trac loc. Wasn't able to pull Tuesday night because my clevis was too small. The pull ended up being on monday night for my class but bad advertisement had more trucks show up. 5 total showed up but I was the only gas. I asked a couple of the smokers (Dodge)if I could borrow there clevis after they pulled and they were ok with that. But two trucks that showed up didn't pull as far as I did at Terre Haute and didn't want to cooperate after another guy brought it to there attention. Pretty bad when 30,000 dollar trucks don't want my 3,000 gasser to pull against them.:metal:

Re: My 1st truck pull

Don't you just love guys like that? Keep your eye on them. If you are not around your truck at ALL times when at a pull, they will jack your clevis, disengage a lockout, screw out a tire core, dump beer in your gas tank...

It sucks that you have to worry about that, I thought it was just a fun competition, apparently others don't feel the same way.

Re: My 1st truck pull

No matter how well you are liked or known, someone will want to mess with you. And they are good at it. Always ready with an excuse. You might find your weights, floor jack, cooler, etc in the back of their truck at the end of the night. They won't even act surprised that you found it there. They will just blame it on someone else claiming they are trying to stir trouble.

Seen it before, and again, and again :sumo:

Re: My 1st truck pull

Good luck there Troy Built, years ago I pulled a stock 69 k20, I was told then by the local pullers to go low side 2nd and have tires at 20 lbs. This past year I have bought a 67 K20 and a 69 K20, both are stock other than the 69 has a late model engine. I have plans to pull them both in my area come September.
