Would YOU do it?
My father in law recently gave me his old truck when he purchased a new one. It is a 1996 Dodge 1/2 ton, regular cab, 2wd, SWB, with a 318/auto. Granted, it is not a perfect truck and has things it needs to make it perfect but it is reliable. I don't drive it much, I've only put 800 miles on it since I got it the beginning of October.
I have a friend from back home who likes to wheel and deal and trade stuff quite often. He has a 1970 Chevy with a NEWLY rebuilt 454 with an auto trans. Man that 454 sounds great through its new 3 inch dual exhaust with Flowmasters. It's also got like new tires on it. I looked over the truck and like it, it's solid in all the right places. It needs a couple cab mounts repaired, but the area around the windshield and firewall and floors are solid. The truck looks really good if your 10-20 feet away. The only thing is it needs it's brakes worked on to make it a daily driver and it is dang cold outside so I would be without a daily driver until it gets warmer so I could do the work in the driveway. My question is......would YOU make the trade? I really want to but I don't know if I'm ready to give up the reliability of the Dodge during winter. |
Re: Would YOU do it?
Sounds like a no brainer to me, I don't think the Dodge will be worth as much as the chevy. Of course I have a partial opinion. Dodges really don't hold value here new or used. Good luck with your decision.

Re: Would YOU do it?
Yeah, I KBB'd the Dodge and it's at about $2500.00. He's asking $3500.00 for the 70 which I think is too much even with the 454 but we would trade straight across. He said the reason he's getting rid of it is he's tired of it and wants to move on to something else.

CHEVY Only

Re: Would YOU do it?
Scott, you do have a problem.....
I guess the question is, do you have a daily driver vehicle (other than your department cruiser)? if so, then I'd be thinking about the trade very seriously. BUT if the Dodge truck would your daily driver (I hate to say this), you may need to keep it. Those big blocks are thirsty and as a commuter vehicle and you'd be losing money. |

Re: Would YOU do it?
Without seeing pics of either trucks its a toss up. I own both a dodge and many c-10's so i like both. Going from a 96 to a 70 your giving up the creature comforts, AC/Cruise fuel injection ect, depending on your resources it could cost alot of $$ on the brakes according to what you want to do ie keep it stock or go disks, again resources are the key. Some people have access to parts and it woundnt be nothing to convert, others dont.
Me, I am not a big block fan and with drum brakes, dont develop a lead foot with that 454, especially when its raining...... Lastly, Is it short wheel base, stepside, long wheel base? That would make a difference to me. Smitty It all depends on what Dodge you have,,,,my Cummins is doing quite well on the resell side..... |
Re: Would YOU do it?
Yeah, we've still got the Trailblazer as a daily driver. I only need a vehicle to run around town in when my wife has the Trailblazer at work and I'm off. Like I said, I've only been averaging 66 miles a week in the Dodge anyway.
The Dodge is a 318 engine SWB. The Chevy is a LWB with a wood bed which I really like. As for the creature comforts, the A/C in the Dodge doesn't work anyway. And I've the parts for the disk conversion. |
Re: Would YOU do it?
okay it's clear as a bell now..... TRADE!

Trade. In the long run the Chevy will increase in value and the Dodge won't.
|
Re: Would YOU do it?
Trade!!!
|
Re: Would YOU do it?
Could be a good trade, but without the pics, its hard to tell. Could be cool with a wood bed though....
But as posted above,,that big block is thirsty :) Smitty |
Re: Would YOU do it?
sure, the big block is thirsty but the dodge will drop a tranny soon. there goes $2000. and if it will only get ~ 66 miles per week you could go a month on a tank.
so....let's see the pics of your Chevy ;) |

Do what would make you the happiest.

Re: Would YOU do it?
sounds like a trade but we need pics of both trucks :)

Re: Would YOU do it?
You are forgetting one very important item... What does your Father-In-Law say about it ?
|
Re: Would YOU do it?
Trade it man and go with the Chevy.:chevy:

Re: Would YOU do it?
i am a chevy guy, so i bought my 72 burb. but a buddy of mine is a big dodge fan and owns an srt-4 and just got an '03 3/4t 4x4 for plowing. as far as durability it's probably a toss up....however...if you are going to be driving in the winter, the late model dodge is the way to go because rust and fender benders aren't going to break your heart. my classic burb is parked in the yard with a big tarp over it while the $#!& is falling. next clear/dry day i get it will be out for another drive. regardless of make, a good classic vehicle is more precious than a modern one!

Re: Would YOU do it?
" i have lost interest in it "translates...I'm tired of working on it...keep the Dodge and save your money for a classic later.

Re: Would YOU do it?
I previously had seen the Dodge CL posting. I try to stay aware of possible deals. I agree with most of the replys so far. Maybe you can delay the trade for a few weeks warmer weather has to arrive soon or work something out with Nate to use his garage for a Saturday afternoon. With his help it might speed up the process and keep you from getting frost bit too. Plus it may give you time to see how it floats over with the inlaws. And if the truck isn't in Rolla and closer to me, I have a sheltered heat here too. Of course don't let me talk you into something that is going to cause a rift on the home front. Idea of doing a conversion in -5 wind chill isn't in the best interest of ones health.

Re: Would YOU do it?
Exactly Sammy, too cold to work on the truck outside. I thought about asking the guy to commit to the trade but hold off for warmer weather. We went to school together growing up so he should be cool with it, he said he's in no hurry but first come first served. My father in law would be cool with me trading, to him it's just an old truck that he used for transportation. He's not really into vehicles too much, especially older ones. The only one he misses is a 73 vette he used to own YEARS ago. He even mentioned that I could trade it off now that the 2nd car got sold.

Re: Would YOU do it?
That is a very good looking chevy. As far as the trade, definitely consider the fuel mileage (or lack of). Big blocks can be expensive, but I understand if you don't drive it often. Very difficult decision. If it were me, I would do the trade, but wait until the weather clears up some. That way you have a four wheel drive while we still have snow...like today where 6-8 inches is forecast, at least down this way...My truck doesn't do very good in this crud, even with 4-60lb sand bags in it. :) But, as already said, do what makes you happy! I don't think it would be a bad deal, but consider reliability and cost. JUST FIX WHAT YOU HAVE ALREADY AND QUIT TRADING THEM BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING!

Dodge looks pretty good to me......

Re: Would YOU do it?
I have 2 trucks. One is a Dodge and one is a Chevy.
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...e/IMG_4193.jpg Advantages= 4x4, cruise control, its comfortable, automatic trans and it has a 360 engine, so mileage aint great, but hey I dont use it that much. It is a very comfortable truck with good pulling power and it is fantastic for hunting. I have never gotten stuck with it. Bought it new, had it since then and its an 01. No trans problems. So that being said, I like my Dodge. Now my second vehicle is my Chevy. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i3...y/IMG_4139.jpg Great truck- gets about 18-20 miles per gallon with the inline 6 and 3 speed trans. Advantages= its a good running truck with good looks. It is original, but not real comfortable and unless you want/can travel cross country without cruise control and the other luxuries, its really just for close travel. Besides it only goes 45mph max. My advice- keep the Dodge and purchase a Chevy or the Chevy if you want it. A 454 is a gas hog, and that truck will require much work. I agree that the Chevy is not worth 3500 dollars. Its a 1000-1200 dollar truck to me. It will not be cheap to fix. If the Dodge is running and paid for it is already saving you some money. |

Re: Would YOU do it?
Im in the camp that thinks about the FIL. Id run it by him first. When I was younger I was given a decent 54 Chev truck by my then BIL. It wasnt running and I put a newer six in it, got tired of it and sold the truck. He was an unhappy camper.
Ever since then when Ive been GIVEN anything and its time to let it go, I ask the previous owner if its cool. Never been a problem. Could be the BIL was just a chump, I do think though it made me a better person to consider the gifters thoughts first. |

I'm cheap brother...;) 1200 max from me. he may get more from somewhere else, but really- thats just a 2wd half ton, nothin special, and it needs work. To me, not so great. |
Re: Would YOU do it?
Never know...That Dodge might be worth something one day...That was the body style that turned it around for Dodge...
|
Re: Would YOU do it?
My Dodge is not a 4x4, only a 2wd. I had a 95 Dodge 4x4 a few years ago and absolutely LOVED that truck! I got rid of it cause the trans was going out. I traded it for a 01 GMC and it was not like I was driving a truck anymore. Don't worry, before I trade I will talk to my father in law just to make sure.
