69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
I have been wanting to install a behind the license plate tank since I bought my truck. I took this as an opportunity to help anyone else who may want to go this route.
Mods - If this need to go someplace else - no problem with me. Here goes....... I bought a 69 Camaro gas tank(18 Gallon), sending unit, straps and anti, squeak kit from a company off of E-bay by ther name of Tamraz for 194.00 shipped. Don't order off ebay, just call the company tell them about the forum and this install and they "may" cut you a deal. Don' bother with the 69 Camaro gas tank straps. It's easier to fabricate your own than use theirs. See if they will swap out the straps for the anti-squeak kit. Their # is 1800-442-4601 Here is a list of other items needed: Flip down license plate holder - 10.00 U-pull 6 ft metal tubing 2"x3" and 8' of 1"x 1/8 strapping - $30 at steel distibutor 10' 3/8 tubing, 4' rubber fuel line, locking gas cap, union for tubing - 32.00 @ Autozone Misc hardware to mount tank to frame and fuel line - $10 at hardware store Total about 276.00 I started by mocking up the tank to the frame to see how much of a spacer I would need with my bumper Once I got the right height I took off the license plate bracket and cut out a square with the cut off wheel, drilled a couple of holes in the bracket and mounted the flip down holder. I cut the 2x3 square, drilled the holes and mounted it to the frame. After that I cut the 1x1/8 and bent them into the shape of the tank, drilled holes and did a test fit. Put everything in place and slid the anti squeak pieces in, tightened it all down. Took out the old tank and fuel lines and pre-bent the new lines to match the old one. Then installed the front portion using the old clips. Installed the back portion with some new clips and hoses. I still need to hang the exhaust so that it doesn't hit the tank and smooth the old gas neck hole but that will be another day. Here is the finished product. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...m/000_1263.JPG I have to say thanks to Bad70sbchevy, without his pics and info none of this would have gotten done. This is truly his build I just detailed it a bit more. I took a bunch more pics and they are in my gallery if you want to check them out. Matt |
Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
I never thought of using a camaro tank. Thanks for sharing!

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
How well does it fill?
|
Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
AWESOME! Thanks for the write up and pics. I plan on doing this as well. . Very clean!
|
Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
Just filled it and it fills great.
|
Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
so thats the original filler area? Does it leak or anything?
|
Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
Thats sweet; I grew up with a '79 TA in the family and thought that was the coolest thing at the gas pump. I have another idea to add to the list :). Any concern with ground clearance it looks kinda low. What is the ride height of your truck? Thanks.

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
I wonder what other years that 69 GM Camaro tank will interchange with??
Always looking for a different source for a part. Camaro equals expensive, 78 Nova equals not so expensive. |
Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
What a great idea.Been kickin around what to do with my. This is the best one so far. Tank out of the cab and still has a factory look. Nice install. Thank for sharing...

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
Thanks man, that thing turned out clean. Great job.:metal:

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
Good write up and pictures. I'll have to do some measuring to see if it will clear a short bed 4x4.

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
67Slider thank you for shareing... Im on a low budget and will have to go this route... Nice set up vs the 700 fuel cells... hey they stick out too... still looks clean... Nice work ! ! ! Having the tank in the cab makes me nervous... especially cause our trucks tend to get t bonned... nock on wood... Thanks again 67Slider !

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
WOW! I like the look, give a factory look to it. I've already installed the blazer tank, but had I seen this first I would have done this. It would have saved me the hassle of putting a gas door in the side of the bed!

Great write up and initiative to try something new!
Do you have any pictures of your Camaro tank installation from the side or back, from a distance and with the bed installed? Seems like the tank is hanging down really low... same look as the blazer style tanks. I recessed a 1949-52 Chevy tank into my '65 'cause I really didn't want to see the tank hanging below the bumper or visible from the side of the truck. |
Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
I haven't put the bed back on. It is still in the "in work" stage. I wil try to take some pics from the side tomorrow.

I took the liberty of lightening up the picture a bit so the tank could be seen in the photo... man that is one shiny bumper :-)

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
Nice build and info, guys. Any reason this wouldn't work on a stepside?
|
Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
Mine is a stepside. Works fine.

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
Cool idea - i like the license plate fill a lot better too...
I'm currently doing a similar install of a 68 roadrunner tank. Its a longer narrow tank (would fit between the rails), wheras the camaro tank is wider. It might not work for shortbeds though, as it is longer. I'm curious to see yours (and mine!) with the bed back on. I'm going to run into a problem with my sending unit being wrong though (73-10 ohms) dodge versus chevy (0-90)... I'll have to deal with that later - modify the sending unit or aftermarket gauge... |
Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
i'm assuming that this type of gas tank relocation would not allow the use of a trailer hitch like this (http://sitepro12.sitepro.com/masterl..._13028_INS.pdf). what do you think?

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
Here are a couple of pics with the bed bolted in. No clearance issues.

whats up 67slider i actually have an el camino bumper do u think the camaro gas tank wud still wrk?
|
Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
I would think so. You would just need to do a good mock up to figure out how much of a spacer you need. That is the key to making it work.

Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
The only thing I might do different is the license plate door. It looks like you have the spring loaded one that when you let go would pop back up. Some models have a break-over point so that once opened they stay in that position until you nudge them back closed. I forget the exact model of car but I pulled a couple on my last junk yard trip. Might make filling up a little easier for you.
|
Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
I totally agree. If you remember the model/year where you picked up the license plate holder that stays open pass it on. I would change mine out too. Looks like I may be spending an afternoon at the wrecking yard!

If I remember right they were from a mid to late 80s Caprice, Pontiac Parisienne, Olds Delta 88, etc. I am positive they were from GM sedans at very least. Here are some pics. Notice how the hinge breaks over and stays in place. They could be mounted up or down. I plan to use mine for hidden hitch purposes. Incidentally, these pics are of the backside, the license plate side is face down.
|
Re: 69 Camaro Gas Tank Install
I'm down for one of these. I am going to see if I can find one. I mentioned to one of the other guys that the hinged door flips up and kind of gets in the way. This would certainly fix that issue.
