dual fan setup??

I have seen then ones that vendors on the board sell, but has anyone ever used fans from a donor vehicle? I was told by a wise mechanic, that you could use dual fans from a dodge caravan for this upgrade. Has anyone done this on a 67-72?

gmc67swb 03-25-2003 08:15 PM

I HAD A BUDDY RUNNING THEM ON A CAMARO. WORKED FINE. IN FACT, I HAVE THEM NOW. I'M JUST NOT RUNNING THEM BECAUSE THEY WERE TOO WIDE. THEY WENT A LITTLE PAST MY FINNED AREA AND ONTO THE TANKS ON THE RADIATOR. SO THEY WOULDN'T SIT FLUSH. IF YOU WERE LOCAL I WOULD GIVE THEM TO YOU. I'VE BEEN SITTING ON THEM FOR A WHILE. JUST A NOTE I'M RUNNING AN AFTERMARKET RADIATOR(GRIFFIN), WITH A SINGLE FAN AND A THERMOSTAT. NEVER GOT HOT YET.

Blue Beard 03-25-2003 11:37 PM

What all is required to make this work on our trucks..............?

minibike 03-25-2003 11:45 PM

I have the radiator and fans out of a 94 camaro.

Blue Beard 03-25-2003 11:55 PM

Do you think the camaro setup would work with the stock truck radiator....?

minibike 03-26-2003 12:01 AM

It is almost exactly the same size.

minibike 03-26-2003 12:06 AM

It is about 18" tall by 25" wide by 5-1/2" deep. I have the 94 camaro radiator in mine...all I had to do was move the radiator supports (parts with rubber in them) out a little.

i have a flexalite set up on my 400 small block. had no problems at all

Yukon Jack 03-26-2003 10:16 AM

Someone mentioned in the past that lated 80's to early 90's Furd Taurus use a 2 dual speed fans. Have also heard that Lincoln Mark IV's have a very powerful setup. Check out this link http://www.geocities.com/smithmonte/...rkVIII_Fan.htm

dubie 03-26-2003 10:24 AM

link no worky :D

Anyone have a wirng diagram for a dual fan setup? Seems like you should run a 20 amp inline fuse from each fan, have it hooked to an thermostat and an in cab switch??

Jesse 67 c-10 03-26-2003 12:57 PM

I got 2 fans from a chevy lumina, earlly 90's, they move a lot of air! made my own brakets cause they're set in some plastic crap but they work great. when I hit the switch if its hot idleing it goes from 200 to 180 in less than a min and keeps dropping after. You need a heavy duty relay, when you get the fans hook em up with an old ammeter to see the draw, then you'll know what relay and fuse to get. Good luck!
Jesse

Lippyp 03-26-2003 01:08 PM

I'd also put a relay in the circuit to each fan, that way you aren't putting a huge current through your thermostat/switch or trying to thread heavy guage wires through your bulkhead.

The single electric fan in my truck (from something Japanese!) was fitted by the previous owner and was wired without a relay. One day I put my hand up behind the dashboard switch (no thermostatic controller yet) in traffic and found that the switch contacts were too hot to touch due to the huge current drawn by the fan going through the switch. Also when turned off the fan would windmill in the ram air coming in the grille and act as a dynamo and light the switch up...weird!

I think Wes has posted a wiring diagram up here before, I'd jsut do a search on electric fan and see what threads you get.

Yukon Jack 03-26-2003 01:14 PM

Linky worky for me :D :D

Blue Beard 03-26-2003 01:21 PM

Not nice to mess with the board members Yukon.................

tried the link, said it would be back in an hour.............sounds like someone went to lunch...........

Yukon Jack 03-26-2003 01:27 PM

Good ole Geocities! It was in my cache, that why I was still able to pull it up, dang it Dubie, you got me on that one!

Do try to check the link out, there is lots of good info in it on this setup.

Blue Beard 03-26-2003 01:43 PM

Here is a pic of an elec. fan someone posted a while back that I was going to use for imspiration.

HotRod929 03-26-2003 04:00 PM

I think that picture of the dual fan setup is sold by www.classicheartbeat.com as a kit. I think Im gonna go that route with my truck.

Anyone using electric fans care to comment on the noise factor, if any??

Kenneth

Long Knight 03-26-2003 04:58 PM

Right now mine goes WHAAAAAAAAAA! I heard an electric one come on once and it went WHrrrrrrrrr. Hope that helps.

Do electric fans help with mpg?

dubie 03-26-2003 05:10 PM

I heard they also help with a small HP gain

Are these fans 'sucking' the air through? I'm asking because I have two fans from a BMW and those used to be fitted in front of the radiator 'blowing' the air through. Does it matter? Which is the better setup?

Thanks.

Edmond

lotik 03-26-2003 05:47 PM

old air has a setup for our trucks.
i have a single that i made brackets for. the pins they give you are crap. busted a hole in my radiator with them.

chevy_fatman 03-26-2003 06:32 PM

Here's a picture I found, I think they are from an early 90's japanese car.

Thanks. I will cherish this bit of information forever.

Does anyone else have any feedback on fan noise that their electric fans make? Is it loud? Annoying? Not a problem?

Kenneth

ZOOMY 03-27-2003 03:08 AM

fans

I've been told that the 18 inch fan from a big ford product works great. The fan itself isn't made by ford, so it's ok to use.....Zoomy

thats nice!

dubie 03-27-2003 09:23 PM

oooooooooooooohhhhh I want them for sure now :D That setup is so SWEET!! How much did the fans cost?

spinning wheels 03-28-2003 01:48 AM

Perma cool sells a dual fan set up now. I'm lucky enough to talk to one of their old employees at the local swapmeets. I constantly picking his brain on cooler and setups. He sells scratch and dent stuff real cheap. This is stuff that they couldn't sell for full retail.
dubie, I will try to find a price on the dual fan setup, but just how soon do you want this setup? And, would you have to pay import tariff, if it was shipped to you?

BobbyK 03-28-2003 03:51 AM

Hey Dubie,if you want the set-up spinning wheels is talking about I can get it to you.I'll be leaving for Winnipeg April 8th.
If you want he can ship it to me and I can bring it across the border when I come to Winnipeg.

The Perm-Ccool fans cost me $83.95 each from Summit.Part# PRM-19114.They are rated at 2100-2900CFM.
http://store.summitracing.com/global.../prm-19114.jpg

I bought a Painless Wireng kit to wire it up $59.95,part# PRF-301102.After seeing it I could have wired it up myself.
http://store.summitracing.com/global.../prf-30102.jpg
The oly thing I would have bought is the thermostat that thread into the head.$32.95 Just for that.
http://store.summitracing.com/global.../prf-30110.jpg

Two 30 amp relays, two 30 amp self resetting circuit breakers or inline fuses and some 10-12 gauge wire.
http://www.painlesswiring.com/thumbs/80130.jpg

The whole thing cost ME approx. $245 to put together. It can be done cheaper with junk yard parts though.

TERRYP 03-28-2003 04:45 PM

TERRYP, I hope you're going to replace that belt soon. It looks like it has seen better days :(

Kenneth

TERRYP 03-29-2003 06:50 AM

I think those fans are out of a full sized Taurus, you'll see they are right as soon as you look under a few Ford hoods. And that belt is one of those new ones with the notched outer belts, softer and less tension needed.

Blue Beard 03-29-2003 09:32 AM

I have one of those belts on my ride too....

Had a fellow make the same comment on mine..............
