Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
Wanting to buy a set of 20's for my 71 SWB C10. I know i want to go with 8.5's up front and 10's out back. Here is my question. My truck already has a 4/6 static drop and my plans are to go with a complete Porterbuilt set-up next year. I just need to know what backspacing to go with on the wheels so i dont have any issues next spring when i do the install of the Porterbuilt stuff.I also dont want the wheels to look odd on the truck before i do the drop. Need your help guys, and it would be nice if i could get someone from Porterbuilt to chime in, since they do this for a living. The truck is coils all the way around with the plans for tubular arms up front when i go with the extreme drop next spring.:waah:
Would also like to go with a little deeper dish in the rear! Please help! Thanks, Newbie!! |
Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
Sup buddy .. Welcome to the board
First, we need to know which rear end housing is in your truck. When you have a moment, lay down under the back of your truck and measure from the inside edge of one rear brake backing plate to the other. .. is this measurement 55.5" or more like 57" ? Tell me more about your drop, is it 2" Spindles, 2" springs and 6" coils? Factory trailing arms and upper/lower control arms now? .. I'll help you get it figured out. What kind of wheel are you looking at? |
Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
You can run the same backspace that you would run on a static dropped truck, that you would run on a truck laying out with PB suspension. It all depends on personal preference of where you want the wheels to sit. On a 71, it should have the wider rear end, but CC69Rat is right, you should measure to verify just in case.
Some like the wheels out to the edge, some want them tucked in. Also, your tire will play a role as well. I know it all may sound complicated with a lot of variables, but once we know a few specifics, we can get you squared away. - Travis |
Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
Thanks guys and you are correct the rear end comes in around 57". ive been looking at some of the new American Racing BLVD. and also the Burnouts. Also like everybodys favorite Coys C-5. Also like the Eagle Alloy 338. Hope this info helps. I just got the truck and it was already lowered. I asked the owner how it was lowered and he said it was that way when he got it but that he thinks the springs were heated.I was going to replace all the springs and add spindles and blocks to achieve the 5.5/7 drop. Let me know what ya think guys

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
That is really low on a static drop,.. do you like low(er) profile tires? Do you plan to keep your stock inner wheel wells in the front? Opposed to a mild C notch?

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
Yeah i dont mind low profile tires i knew id need them to accomplish a low static drop. Im not at all opposed to a notch cause ill be putting in a step notch once i get the porterbuilt stuff. Open for any suggestions . thanks guys

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
I guess I need to measure mine as well so I can get some help. I plan on Porterbuilt front to back next year & im wanting to go with 20x8.5's up front with slosh tubz & 20x10s in the back. Im looking at getting the budnik murok 4 rims. ( for the 1967 )

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
That is a low static drop. I would suggest a mild 4.5/6 (or 4.5/5) until you do the PB suspension. It would make things a little easier in regards to your notch and clearing inner fender wells.

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
I know that its a pretty low static drop ,but will that effect the offset of the wheels. Like i said i want the wheels to work with both the static drop and when im ready to go lower with the Porterbuilt stuff and air ride. Offset help please!!!:hmm:
|
Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
In short, the offset will be the same with the PB suspension as with a static drop..... at least how I like the wheels to sit and how we set them up. You will be good to go.

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
20x8.5 -5.375 to 5.5" bs up front
20x10 - 5.5 to 6" bs on the rear 255/40/20 (F) 295/40/20 (R) I personally would do 5.5" in the front and 6" in the rear and maybe run a small spacer if needed till you lay it out. Once its laying frame you can pull the spacers out. But were talking .25" here.. not a lot. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
I believe n2billet's latest Porterbuilt Extreme Dropmember is running:
Front: 20x8.5 (5.25" BS) with 1" narrowed PB a-arms. Rear: 22x10 (5.5" BS) with the narrower (67-69) rearend housing. |
Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
That's an idea too, run 5.25 bs up front as long as you have stock control arms then when she's on the dirt get Nates 1' narrowed arms and pull them in a bit. Sounds like a plan to me.
^^ do that same setup and swap rear end housings when you lay it out?? Several options. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
What backspace would you guys suggest on the narrower 67 rearend with a static drop?

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
^^ how low are you?

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
I would run a 4.75" backspace.

8" or 8.5" or 9" or 9.5" wide rear wheel will require a different backspace. |

heres mine with a pb front dropmember, and ART tubular arms. im running 255/35R20 tires on 20x8.5" rims. the fronts are a +35mm offset, and the back are a +10mm offset. no spacers or anything up front and nothing rubs, i can turn lock to lock a few inches off the ground. the back i am running a 1-1.25" spacer cant remember exactly but they clear the quarter panels as well without rubbing or hitting anything

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
Just for the record, my personal tastes tend to lean a little toward sacrificing a .25" of backspacing to gain a little room for more of a sidewall. I'm not saying a lower profile is bad.. I'm just saying my opinion may differ from most being a majority of the guys running 20s will use 40 series tires. Me I just set the wheel a little more underneath the truck so the section width of the tire has a little more breathing room.
Keith and Travis know this as well as the best in the business.. but I still like to try and help .. best of luck to you man. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
Yeah killer looking truck screamin. What size tires you running front and rear, and to achieve the 8" drop out back did you have to cut anything out of the bed floor for your notches?
|
Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
255/35 front and 275/40 rear just a bolt in notch.. Stock inners front and rear..

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
One last question for you guys! If i decided to go with a 22" wheel in the rear what sie would i need to go with. Would i still go 10" with 5.5 backspace, and what size tire would you go with?? Just trying to figure it all out before i make the plunge!:uhmk:
|
Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
Yes, I would run the same backspace for a 20' as a 22". Tire size depends on personal preference, but take a look at a 285/35/22.
|
Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
So front would be 255/40/20
and rear would be 285/35/22 both with a 5.5 backspace. This sound about right |
Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
Guess you didnt need the wheel backspace specs with the tire specs.Wheel sizes 20x8.5 front and 22x 9.5 rear

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
Looking to run 15x10 Aero Wheels with 275/60R15 tires all around on my 67. Haven't measured the rear end yet but its already got a 5on5 swap. Going with a static coil over Touring DM up front and Mild DM out back. Possible to run the same backspacing on all four wheels? Recommended BS? Not running inner front fenders and want it as wide as possible.

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
So would you recommend going 255/40/20 up front with the 285/35/22 out back.

Re: Wheel questions? Porterbuilt questions!!
Hey guys,
I know this one is a little older but with all the knowledge in here I'm wondering if anyone can recommend backspacing and tire size for my truck. I am working on a 67 GMC 1500 stepside. I am installing the porterbuilt extreme dropmember front and rear and am looking to run 18's up front and 20's in the rear. Hopefully with widths of 8-8.5 up front and 9.5-10 in the rear. It has the factory narrow rear end under it and it will have the narrowed and centered porterbuilt A arms. Also I would prefer a dished look in the rear if possible. Hopefully this is enough info for a good starting point. Thanks and have a great day. |
