X2 for a cool swap, still have the old cab, and a frame that you could do serious work with

Something tells me the 80 series frame/suspension might be just a touch more HD than a 3500HD.

Re: 1959 spartan 80 frame swap

The 1959 spartan 80 the front track is 71.25 inch's

and a friend told me that the 1995 3500 HD is about 70.50

but I want to measure everything else to make sure that it will fit

next week I will go measure it in the scrap yard

Re: 1959 spartan 80 frame swap

I'da done it the other way.............put the newer axles under the original Sparton .

What do you expect to use the truck for ?

Canadian model numbers on GMCs are inverted compared with US models. I have a few Canadian GMC brochures.........and pictures .

And then there was "Maple Leaf" !

Here is mine. Its a 1958 60 Viking on a 1998 chevy 3500 chassis. Not an HD though. I could not find an HD that fit my pricerange and criteria.

Not hijacking, I will be doing a build thread here in a few weeks. Just posting a few pics for the reference.

Pretty sure that's the best looking bed I've seen. Nice truck!

Nice truck warrior 9 and its look pretty low . is your cab close to your frame ?

DG Racing 02-23-2014 02:49 AM

Re: 1959 spartan 80 frame swap

ok i started to work back on my truck the new frame is Under the cab ready to do the cab mounts , im happy of the look of it , not that much to do , need to cut the firewall for valve cover and the lower of the grill that i remove about 2 inch , to have it as low as possible .

Re: 1959 spartan 80 frame swap

Looks nice!!!! One question. Could you move the engine crossmember up about 3 inches? Might move the engine just enough so you wouldn't have to cut the cab or valve covers.

DG Racing 02-23-2014 06:57 PM

Re: 1959 spartan 80 frame swap

yes i can but if i keep the motor in the original motor location my corvette headers fit perfect , a long water pump fit perfect, and my drive shaft fit perfect , so it cheaper to modify the cowl dash a little .and use the part I have in stock . I will maybe pull the cab toward the rear just to clear the valve cover and check how the wheel look in the fender
for now its center

Re: 1959 spartan 80 frame swap

Understand. One other thing to maybe look at would be an LCF truck. They had a shorter front end nd may give you an idea or two.. I think the body is good where it is at too!!!

warrior9 02-23-2014 10:37 PM

Re: 1959 spartan 80 frame swap

DG, my cab sits fairly close to the frame. I like what you are doing and I can appreciate how much work and time it takes to get the fitment right. I wanted an HD but couldn't find one in my price range.

It sure is a dance to get the wheel to fit in the center of the fenderwell, keep the cab at the right height and fit the engine in where it isn't too far forward or too far back.

my engine is tight up against the cab. I have a big block. The valve covers will be a pain to take off, however, even where it sits, I barely have room enough for a fan against the radiator.

Does your truck have a big block?

greywuuf 02-24-2014 12:08 AM

Re: 1959 spartan 80 frame swap

the heads in post #23 appear to have the valves all lined up to me ( denoting a small block ) been a while since i been inside a chevy but I think I am right.

Re: 1959 spartan 80 frame swap

i have a SBC so it gives me a chance for the fan

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...nonce/0112.jpg

but i just find out that my original rad is very tall and it sits on my steering box :(

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...nonce/0142.jpg

but i m Lucky i have a aluminum rad from my 3100 1957 truck so i tried it on my 1959 and it fits ok :)

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...nonce/0212.jpg

its not as tall as the original one

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...nonce/0232.jpg

and for my left valve cover its fit ok , but not the right one ,
and like i said my 1980 corvette headers are a direct fit :)

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...nonce/0182.jpg

Next week I will install the master cylinder and the steering columm , and after everything is install I will do the body mounts :)
