How many of you guys are running 700r4's
 

I am diving in to this project of getting a 700r4. I know allot of people have done this but I can't find the info I am looking for. Who did you use for the trans build local or online, bowtietrans? TCI? Ex......? What stall are you guys running? TV kits? What are u doing for lock up? Ex.... What price range am I looking at or can expect?

Info on my truck 72 c10 swb. 383 stroker healthy with lumpy cam. Built th350 but looking for mor of a cruiser, hence the 700r4 swap.

PLEASE HELP I AM GETTING MIXED INFO ON THIS SWAP.

I ordered mine from Bowtie Overdrives about 11 years ago...no problems so far...knocking on wood.

I ordered everything I needed from them (except cross member) and everything went together well.

Couldn't say about the price now...but I'm sure its on their site.

replaced my th350 with a 700r4 about a month ago and its the best thing I have done. It really helped me because I drive my truck almost every day and do a lot of highway driving. I bought my lockup kit from TCI and had to have my driveshaft shortened 3". You will also need a corrector bracket kit for your TV cable hook up on your carb. I got mine for about $17 from summit. I did the swap myself in my garage and everything went pretty smooth. Just make sure you get the TV cable set up right.

I have bought 2 700R4's from Phoenix transmission. Liked them a lot. I had them behind a ZZ4 crate engine with a 2200 stall. If I ever need another tranny I will buy from them for sure

I know there are certain years you do not want if you look for a used one. I found mine in a junkyard, I cannot remember the good years but it was one of them. It is the 700R4 not the 700R4E which is the electronic version. I put Lokar linkage on it and hooked the lock-up to a switch (Lighted Button) on my dash. The speed cable doesn't connect without a ridiculously priced converter so I bought a GPS speedo. Mine shift perfectly. Makes me wonder why they ever needed a computer later.

I put a 700 R4 in my 84 GMC W/O a lockup converter. I have a 2300 stall, to match my cam and keep the truck from pushing itself through a stop light when sitting at one. I originally purchased mine from Premier Perfomance transmissions---JET bought them out several years ago. However I since have had my local tranny guy upgrade it more and it is a lot more tranny than it was from Premier.

The RPM change was a very noticeable and with a 3.73 geared rear end and a 383 stroker engine, I can pull down a steady 15 MPG on the hghway at 75+ MPH.

I had mine built by a local shop in '97 for around $1100 with converter and adaptor plate to Olds. It has stood up very well. I have 4.11 tail gears and run about 2200 R.P.M. at 65 mph. I have an 1800 R.P.M. stall with lockup.

As you have a lumpier cam than I, you'll probably want a 2500 R.P.M. stall or so.

I got mine in '98 out of a low-mileage '91 Corvette. Changed the tail housing and good to go.

3:55 - 3:73 rear gears best for 700R4. other gears will work depending on how tall of rear tire used. project33.com has a good calculator.

Just fininshed this swap.
Was running a t350.
The 700r4 sits behind a new ZZ4.
Drive shaft shortenend about 3".
Used the existing crossmember.
Running a TV cable from a 93 Camaro.
Rear ration 3.73
Purchased a Certified 700R4 from my local Buick dealer. It was from a 91 Corvette with a 2200rpm stall. Cost $1500.

I went with the 200-4R for mine. No driveshaft work to install it, the holes are in the correct place to slide the crossmember back, and the local transmission builder said they are better than the 700R4 in many ways.

I've had the rebuilt/upgraded 200 in my truck for a year now with the 350, and no troubles at all. Everything I have read says it will handle the 402 big I'm going to install next month with ease.

See the 700r4 installed in my K20 on the build thread linked in my signature below. I went with one from BTO - the owner had a 72 K20 and knew exactly what I needed for the swap.

When you look to buy a used 700r4, look at the cooler line fitting area. You want one that has a curved line in the area. It looks like a rainbow. I believe it's the 88-93 yrs. those are the better yrs. I'll post up a photo of what I'm talking about once I get off work. Also, check out my build thread, about half way through, you'll see what upgrades you want. "Beast Sunshell", etc.

I forgot to post up that photo for you. You want the 87-93 yrs, they have the auxiliary valve body. You can see the curved line cast into the casing that runs through the top fluid cooler fitting, that's the quickest way to see you have the right yr.

If you go the junkyard route, you can get a dipstick tube for a '90s Astro van to bring it out better. Used that in my 66 with a 700R4 and it cleared the heater box very well

I received a quote from Bowtie Overdrives recently, $1983.05 delivered to my house in Florida. Pricey, but it does include the converter (1800), TV system, lock up kit, shift linkage, and their installation kit.

I don't have one in a 67-72 yet, but I have one in a 70 SS 454 El Camino and one in a 65 Chevelle with a 377 Stroker. I love being able to smoke the tires from a stop and cruise at 75.

I have two different shops here that I trust to do these trannys.

So I got a quote today from a local shop that has a good rep. All said and done $2,300 that is take out old trans, move cross member, build trans w/ upgraded parts, 2400 stall
, shorten drive shaft, all linkage and wiring ex.......... drop of on Monday and get it back road worthy Friday. It sounds high to me. What do you guys think.

I doubt that. Just use whatever housing is on it, shorten or lengthen driveshaft accordingly.

I used to have one in my 81, but I accidentally burned up the 3 and 4 clutch packs by towing a trailer behind it on the interstate. Until that happened that was the best transmission that I ever owned. My 350C turbo does not even come close.

So I got everything ordered yesterday. The trans is being built this week and I will drop of the shift parts and tv made ez when they come in. Then then the truck will be dropped of and the transplant will begin. What end of the drive shaft did you guys shorten? The front half or rear? Or should I go with a single driveshaft ? What are the pros and cons of single drive shaft?

In my opinion the BTO one is an awesome product. They have them for most carbs and look nice also. Ask for Jenn if you call them, the girl knows her tranny's and service is top notch , they are an easy install and adjustment.
