67 Custom Camper Wheels
3 Attachment(s)
I did a search for this, but couldn't find anything definitive.. Hoping someone can shed some light. Recently picked up a 67 1/2 ton Custom Camper.. The SPID calls for 04PO3AA Chromed Hubcaps. A couple of questions. The truck came with the wheels in pics 1 & 2. 16" with 4 nubs. I'm assuming these aren't the original rims. I assume that because in pic 3, the spare, is a 16" with clips and it looks like it's been in the spare tire carrier for quite a while. So, I'm assuming that the truck came with 16" rims originally since it's a Custom Camper. Which are correct? The rim with the clips, or the 4 nubs? Does anyone have an example of the 04PO3AA hubcaps? Did they make hubcaps that will work with the 4 nubs that look like 04PO3AA hubcaps? Is the rim in pic 3 a split rim?
Thanks. DP |

Yes, that is a split rim. Are you sure it isn't a 16.5 tire? 16.5 is what would have been on the truck originally. Only the '67's and '68's have the inside clips. I think the only optional wheels for '67 & '68 were 16.5 x 8.25. You could get 9.75" wide wheels but I think they were aftermarket. Here is a picture of the 16.5 x 8.25 wheels on my '68 CST/Custom Camper. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.... LockDoc |

If the tire is a 16 inch the rim would have to be also. Here is a picture of the '67 & '68 plated hub caps. '67 had a red stripe and '68 had a black stripe. (not my pictures) LockDoc |

Not to my knowledge but someone that knows their hubcaps better than me may chime in on that.... LockDoc |

That last photo looks like a variation on the 65-66 Custom Camper wheels (although those were 8 lug). The earlier CC wheels were also 7.50 x 16 on a 6" lock ring wheel.
I thought Chevy didn't come out with a 1/2 ton Custom Camper till '69. Or am I mixed up? |
Re: 67 Custom Camper Wheels
The split rim would be a 16". These caps come in either 6-lug version for outer nub wheels or clip style for 8-lug wheels. That wider wheel Leon showed is an 8.25 not necessarily Custom Camper wheel that would be the same for a 65/66 or 67//68. All GM clip-style caps for 8-lug wheels interchange

Re: 67 Custom Camper Wheels
I know there was not a 1/2 ton custom camper in the 60-66 era. Only 3/4 ton.

Re: 67 Custom Camper Wheels
Hmmm. I've read here on the Custom Camper thread in this section that the 1/2 ton CC only became available in 1969.

Re: 67 Custom Camper Wheels
The wheels in pictures 1 & 2 are optional 16", which were required on the Custom Camper to allow for heavier rated tires. Custom campers were available in 1/2t until 69.

Re: 67 Custom Camper Wheels
Seems to me that the 6 lug 16" split rim shown in picture three with the clips would require the 3/4 ton hub cap, only thing is the lug nut area with the clips doesn't look big enough for the ring on the 3/4 ton cap to fit inside

Re: 67 Custom Camper Wheels
Is a split rim, and a lock ring wheel the same thing?

Re: 67 Custom Camper Wheels
Not sure how rare 1/2 ton Custom Campers are in Chevys (did GMC offer one, too?) but Ford also offered a half ton F100 Camper Special. I happen to own one (you can see it in my gallery) and I know they are very uncommon. I've only ever seen a handful. I suspect it was the same story for the light duty Chevy CC. I believe Ford phased out their 1/2 ton CS after 1967 or 68 so they only made a light duty CS for 2 or 3 years, probably due to lack of demand, I suppose.

Re: 67 Custom Camper Wheels
Posted this info in the for sale section on another post. Looks like it would be helpful here also. The far left hubcap is for half ton nub 15 and 16 inch 6 lug nub wheels and center hubcap is half ton Clip wheels 15, 16, 16.5 and 17.5 6 lug wheels. Far right is 3/4 ton and one ton with the larger hubcap ring inside for 16 , 16.5, 17, 17.5. and 19.5 as long as they are 8 lug wheels.

Great post by 60-66. Anybody with a pre '69 pickup should study those photos before purchasing any hubcap. They all have the same styling and look the same from the front, but there are 3 different back sides. Watch out for wheels also, they often the most changed out item on any old pickup. The first photo is the period correct 16" wheel, the second photo is a '71 and newer disc brake wheel. Both will accept the original PO3 hubcap (chromed version of the painted hubcap on far left side above). Hard to time date the lock ring wheel, IMO, it is overkill for a 1/2 ton pickup anyways. The Custom Camper option between '67-'72 is basically a beefed up suspension option, a pale comparsion to the original '65-'66 custom campers, which had several comfort and appearance items included in the package. With the series 10 C.C. option, I believe the 7.00-15 was the tube type tire on 3 piece heavy duty lock rim wheels, the 6.50-16 and 8-16.5 were tubeless tires on 1 piece rims.

Re: 67 Custom Camper Wheels
Hey, Factorystock.... you'd know this. Was the C10 custom camper only available 67-69?

Yes, Series 10 Custom Campers were '67-'69 only. I find wheels are very interesting subject, especially pre '69 wheels. Here is a rare look at the 3 piece 15" lock wheel on a '68 10 series. If you study this wheel closely, you will see the lock rings are a different design that was used on the 16" lock ring wheel. Tire looks like a Goodyear Hi Miller.

I knew you'd have the low-down. Thanks!
PS: Dig those 15" lock ring wheels! |
