ambulance questions....
Are they equipped with a posi? How can I identify it besides the glove box(which is removed)? I know they have numbers stamped but is there a certain number I should b looking for Please help!!
My neighbor is sending it to the bone yard and I need to know fast. |
Posi rear
1. Block the front tires.
2. Take truck out of gear, release brake. 3. Lift the rear wheels off of the ground. 4. By hand spin one of the rear wheels. 5. If the other wheel spins in the same direction you have Posi ! 6. If it spins in the opposite direction you dont. |
My 69 was an ambulance / first repsponse vehicle for a NM VFD. It came as a basic model Custom 10 and they optioned for the 396 BB, Turbo 400, heavy duty Brakes, heavy duty cooling system and large capacity alternator. It did come with a 12 bolt but it is a non posi unit.
Lucky for me it wasn't a chop/add a top conversion. I have done some serious searching on the net to find information about these conversions. ANd honestly there is not alot out there. But it seems that the Burb's would be bought and shipped to a coach builder for the conversion in most cases. It was there they added what they wanted. As far as something coming standard from the factory (like posi rear), i don't think there was a norm. It was basically what you added to your option list when you purchases the vehicle. Hope this helps. BTW Burb71 is correct on how to check for posi. |
Thanks you for your help.

I have a '71 which serve as an ambulance at some time, glove box read 396, 400 turbo, Hvy duty cooling, but also one of the rear interior wheel wells was cut out. I suppose this gave extra room for gurney? Anyone else seen this?
|
Wow that is a new one for me. I have never seen one cut out like that. mine is just like a standard suburban.
|
That was probably a cutout for a stretcher or a bank of storage lockers.

My Ambulance has posi. Burb 71 is right!! I tried it. Thanks Burb 71 :gi: :hmm:

I have a 68 burb that didn't have the clam shell bambalance top, but it does have a flattened rear wheel well. I believe they had a seat running along that side.
Mine was also a big block and also has a Dana 44 3.54 posi rear. |
