Undercoat removal ???

I need some help, Next weekend I plan to starting stripping the bed down on the new 1970 longbed, and need to know the best way to remove the undercoating from the bottom side of the bed. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Putty knife and a propane torch

If you go puttyknife and propane torch, get lots of paint thinner to take the undercoating grime off down to bare metal (I assume you are going to paint or reapply undercoat here)

My experience has been that a grinder & wire wheel is the best for removing undercoating down to bare metal. Make damn sure you wear safety glasses and really crappy clothes because it's guaranteed you'll have molten rubber and wires flying everywhere.

I will be taking it down to the metal, It looks like I;m in for some serious fun. (NOT!), thanks for the responses :flag:

Have it sand blasted. That'll remove everything!

sand blasting will warp it.knife and torch or baking soda blasting is the best

eastwood co has a product called"under off" for removing undercoating

Yet another reason not to undercoat :D

I agree with the putty knife method, painful but effective

Sure, if done incorrectly. Best done with walnut shells, and maybe a mix of glass.

Sand blasted my bed inside and underside with #4 blasting sand from a pressurized pot, no warping. Don't sand blast the inside of the fenders though or you could warp them.

Soda blasting will not remove rust.

I used paint stripper (aircraft paint stripper from autozone) made the undercoat real easy to remove...little messier but a whole lot less heat.....

Everyone is assuming a steel deck, if so, then heat and putty knife. I wouldn't use any open flame tho, a hot air gun will do the trick. If its a wood deck then I would just leave it alone!

Has anyone used the stripper from Eastwood?

FRENCHBLUE72 10-06-2004 09:26 PM

Never used the stripper but I did use a stiff wire wheel on my makita disk grinder to remove all the undercoating off the botton of my truck..
