The Big Score

The other day I ran into an old freind. We got to talking about our vehicles and I had told him I was looking to fine a set of 3/4 ton axles. He told me that he had a truck with a busted tranny and trasfer case sitting in his yard. I ask him what he wanted for it and his reply was, "If I could find some one to pull the motor out of it they could just have the rest of the truck". I told him I was his guy and today we pulled it to the shop and went to work. In about 45 minutes I had the motor out. I Got the axles out tonight ad found that they have 4:10 gears in them. I do have a question, how do I tell the difference from a 3/4 ton and a 1 ton rear? The brake drums just look a little big to be 3/4 to me. I am guessing that it is a GM 14 bolt but not sure how to tell the difference. It does have 14 bolts around the cover and the penion bolts in from the front too. If any one could help I would appreciate it. I took pics with my phone but it wont let me send them for some reason.

Chuck,
both the 3/4 and 1 tons had the 14 bolt rearend. The 1 tons had narrower perch spacing, but I am unsure of the measurement. What front axle did you get? If it is a dana 60, then it was a 1 ton.

1 ton 40.5" center spring to center spring
3/4 ton 42.5" center spring to center spring

I bought an 1 ton 14 FF yesterday with 4.10's and open carrier for $85
but I need to move the spring perches and shock mounts since it's going in my 3/4 ton sub.

this is your quote "and the penion bolts in from the front too.It does have 14 bolts around the cover " This tells me that you have an eaton ho52, or ho72. I want to say this is the origonal 14 bolt. someone will correct me if im wrong on the origonal 14 bolt part. Hopefully it has a no spin.

if it has 14 bolts holding the diff cover on, then its a 14 bolt for sure.
Eaton H052/72 only had 10 bolts in an uneven pattern, plus the Eaton's diff is round and has a dropout third.
However they both have 14 bolts holding the ring gear to the carrier.

Yeah mudder thats probably the one he has. when he said the pinion bolts in from the front, I just thought he meant the 3rd member. Sorry if i caused any confusion. Can anyone answer whether the eatons were considered the origonal 14 bolts or not? thanks Todd

Todd, the eatons-H072/H052 were the predessecors(sp?) to the 14 bolt which appeared in 1973, the eatons were used from I believe 1947-1972.
