Dash Removal?
How come my Dash won't come out.
I took all the bolts off the sides where it bolts to the "A Pillars" or Cowl...and disconnected the steering column/brake pedal brackets. But it seems that it is being held in by something under the Windshield Gasket????? Do I have to take the W/S out to access another bolt...or is the dash spotwelded in at tht bottom windshield seem?? - that wouldn't make sense if they bolted the rest of it in though. Thanks guys Andy |
Yep Andy you've got it..... They spot welded the dash at the bottom of the windshield opening ... and it's covered with the windshield rubber.. You will either have to remove the windshield and drill the spot welds out, or you can cut the dash right along the openings under the dash pad.. either way you'll have some welding to do.. There is a Special Drill bit that drills a small hole through one piece of sheet metal, and a larger one through the other.. So in otherwords... It will drill a small hole through the side you want to retain, and a larger hole in the dash part that will be discarded.. Then you can spot weld it back in the same spots it was.... ( I forgot the name of the Bit )) I can check mine tomorrow, Or, there should be someone here that remembers the name... They cost about $12.00 and Up...

Spot weld cutter....is the name of what you're describing.
Try Eastwood for a good one for a fair price. That's where I got mine. |

Yes, that's the one I have. I bought it probably 10 or 11 years ago. It still works great to this day. I've used it a good bit over the years too.

SpotWelds
Yeh I have Blair spotweld cutters...cause i can get them at the local parts store and the 3/8" hole saw screws on and off the Arbor and the bit is reversable.
I just didn't know that they were spot welded in....thanks guys..i'll just take the W/S out and sand out the dash.....I just wanted to take it out to make painting it and the inside of the cab easier. But i'm not going through the hastle now...besides i have to drill spot welds out for the rocker and cab supports...it the worse part of panel replacement...they made me do it all the time in the body shop... oh well..thanks guys |
