Help with casting #s please

Howdy all,

I finally decided to drag my big belly over into the engine compartment and find what motor I'm running. Dang those #s are hard to see. :rolleyes:

Anyway, turns out according to this page, 14010201 is a '80-'84 305 which is what I was told when I bought the truck.

The guy I bought it from gave me a extra complete engine minus intake and told me it was 350. If I'm reading it right, the same page says that 3970010 could be either a 1968 327 or a 69-79 350.

Is there another way to determine if its a 327 or a 350? Or am I reading the page wrong?

All help is appreciated.

If you have the date code that is cast into the back of the block, that would help.

Also, if you get the suffix code off of the engine pad in front, that will give you a lot of information.

Although there are other possibilities, I have only seen the 3970010 code on 350 4 bolt main engine blocks.

I have seen one engine with 010 with 2 bolt mains but most are 4 bolt. All of them that I have ever seen are 350's they just list it for 327 cause the bore's are the same so it is a possibility that they used that block for a small number of 327's. When you see that casting number you can usually count on a 350 4 bolt, but it's good to check just in case.

A 4 bolt main would be sweet. I'll have to see if I can find the suffix code and check it. Wish I had a motor stand so I could pull the oil pan and have a look! :D

Thanks for the replies gentlemen.

Nathan, thanks for your service sir.

Suffix code is V0403TBX.
If I'm deciphering it right according to this page :

V= Flint
04= April
03= 3rd
TBX= I loose track here. The Suffix code page lists a couple different possibilities for TBX.

The partial VIN# on the stamped right below the suffix is C9S184267. Make any sense?
