big engines

This is a wierd question, but does anyone know what the biggest gas engine Chevy ever made for any vehicle was? Say 1964 to present. Thanks.

cableguy0 11-18-2004 10:14 PM

im gonna have to say the biggest engine is the new 8.1 something like 493 cubic inches dont know of anything else bigger than that

68w/sbc406 11-18-2004 10:23 PM

cableguy0 11-18-2004 10:27 PM

Dean23 11-18-2004 10:29 PM

the 8.1 is the biggest production motor gm made. its 496 cubes.

9.3 Litre 572ci 720hp Crate only
8.2 Litre 502ci 91-93 Chevy/GMC trucks (option)

Up until reasently it was the 500 Caddy engine...

Gator70 11-18-2004 11:11 PM

Was there not a 637 used in 3 ton style trucks. I thought that it was stilla BBC style block.

lofly'a 11-18-2004 11:11 PM

You sure about that?
The bore is 4.3 inch, the stroke is 4.304 X 8 cylinders....comes out to 500 cubic inches.
For those of us who can't do this kind of math, you can use a number of on line calculators to find the volume of an engine....like THIS ONE
The caddy is 500 cubes...or 8.19 liters for all the metric fans out there.

ryanroo 11-19-2004 02:39 AM

Sweet72 11-19-2004 09:06 AM

I know it's a GMC motor but we should include the 702ci/11.5L V12/twin V6.

orangepunkn 11-19-2004 01:09 PM

I took a look at my chiltons and it showed the caddy as a 501 cubic inch

I always thought they were referred to as "501's"

72 CustomCamper 11-19-2004 03:14 PM

Everything I've ever seen has them listed as 500 cid...

'70_402 11-19-2004 03:39 PM

there is another reason to add my list named: "why not to use chiltons manuals"

Longhorn Man 11-19-2004 03:43 PM

LOL! You ever looked at the early to mid '80s front wheel drive hayns/chiltons manuals?
In the trouble shooting section of the book for my old Citation, it said if there is a metalic clicking noise as you drive slowly down the road, to inspect the U-JOINTS!!

toddtheodd 11-19-2004 04:36 PM

I thought the 502's came in some trucks.

Longhorn Man 11-19-2004 04:45 PM

nope, the 502 has always been a crate motor
