How much power can be made with TBI?
I got an offer to buy a totaled 91 chevy truck with a 350TBI and a rebuilt 700R4, i was just wondering how much power can the TBI system handle? I would like my truck to have at least 350HP, can the TBI make this much power? Also who would have a wiring harness to make this worK(i can get all of the 91 wiring).

I dont' know the answer, but I saw on an episode of Horsepower TV where they converted the factory TBI to port Fuel Injection. The factory TBI was modified to only carry air, then fuel rails were installed on the new intake that came with the kit. I believe the kit even came with the necessary in tank fuel pump. I want to say it was an Edelbrock kit, but cant remember for sure.

from past experience with customers rides I see no reason not to be able to get 350HP. since you have the factory TBI harness & ECM I would use that. it will be able to control the trans & would be the easiest in my opinion. just may take a little cleaning up (extra wires). if you need help I can get a diagram of factory & tell you which ones are not needed.
otherwise Painless does have them but I would save the $ for other things. (about $400) |
You can get 350hp out of a tbi...just be prepared to spend at least three times as much as you would with a carb motor. For eveything tbi, go to the Camaro/Firebird website www.thirdgen.org ...those Camaro boys have been playing with tbi for a long time. They helped me a lot when I was building my '93 (see sig).
As for me, I got tired of spending so much money for so little horsepower...remember a stock tbi flows basically the same as a 2-barrel carb. I just sold my '93 and bought a '77 Silverado. Thank goodness I'm back working with a carb! No more high dollar injectors, harnesses, chip burning...and on and on....blech. Just my 2 cents, SC |
Here is some good reading on TBI:
