damn, andy, i think you beat me to it!!! stop already!   ;) jewels. |
yep..by 5 min too!
And to think...I don't know how to type, and I still beat you to it. ;) |
Thanks for the link. I`m not worried about trying to start it with another switch right now, I just need to get the old one out so I can replace it with one that I have a key for. Would drilling it help any or would it just make it worse? Thanks.

me too
Would like a highly probable way to get one out without damage to dash. Are metals inside lock hardened and drilling would be fruitless effort? Can locksmith get one out?
|
I've had to drill a few out. It's not too hard but I used 4-5 different size bits just to make sure that the drill didn't jump aroound and hit the dash...

We drill them out with a 3/8 bit.

Try every old Chevy key you can borrow or steal. If it goes in all the way, jiggle it around while putting counter-clockwise pressure on it. You might get lucky.

If you don't mind wrecking the bezel around the ignition cylinder just pick an appropriate size if hole saw that fits inside the bezel and use it without the pilot bit. The bezel will center it for you and hole saw away. The only thing that will actually get damaged is the bezel itself and it takes about 30 seconds to get the job done.

If you are drilling it out, don't forget to remove the wiring harness before you do it.

The chevrolet lock is what's called a Sidebar Wafer lock....hard to pick too.
Not only do the keys line up the tumblers....but doing so allows a side bar to fall in place with the tumblers. Wish I could find the pic in my books for this... Use to do locksmith work part time and learned alot about these. |
Can't remember off hand but just the size that slips down inside with a little to spare on each side. I just grabbed what ever I had that was close.
