transfer case shift knob...got one?
My 72 4x is missing the transfer case shift knob. There isn't many parts companies who offer this part. LMC did but lists the part as unavailable when I recently tried to order one. Anyone have a good knob for sale or know of another company offering these in reproduction? Thanks.

Is your shifter 7/16 thread or 3/8 thread. This may help you till you get the right one. TSC Farm supply stores sell a knob for tractors that is the same without lettering. It is 3/8 thread. I used a tap and rethreaded it (mine is 7/16 thread) and it worked fine.
You can do the same if you get one from a later model that has the 3/8 trd and it will have the pattern on it. |
Thanks Phuloi68 - I'll keep that as an option. It would at least make the interior look finished. I would rather have one of the correct style and with the lettering. I have one from an '84 which I was thinking of using but it wouldn't look right. I'll check my thread size. Thanks again.

I think the thread size changed for the 71-72 years.

You must be right, Jim, because GMCPauls sells '67-'70 xfer shift knobs, but not any for '71-'72s. Curious parts support gap.

Thought I posted a second reply about knob and it's gone. must be my advancing age.
Anyway, I think Chevy and Ford used the same knob on the 205 transfer cases. If you find one from one of these, the lettering might be what you need and the thread size issue can be dealt with. If you get one and the thread is 3/8 and you need the 7/16, use a starter tap first and follow it with a bottoming tap. Just go slow and it will work fine. |
Still looking......ttt

Bandit, I feel sorry for whoever has to sit in the front seats' center position.
Imagine a wreck wherein you forgot to fasten your seatbelt behind that medieval throwback.:D |
These are pictures to show you the different knobs for the 205 t/c.
In the picture of the two threaded areas, I rethreaded the one on the left to the 7/16 fine threaded as previously discussed. They were both 3/8 starting out. I rethreaded it about 1 inch. Fard and chevy use the same knob. Don't know which one is right for the year you have. (Hopefully, The pictures can be seen, never tried to do this before) . Looks like it worked. 1st time luck |
Second picture, top row, far right knob. Not for a NP205. That knob is for a NP203 t-case. All the others are for 205's.

Phulio68 - thanks for posting the shift knob options. I recognize some of these knobs from later year trucks. Could someone tell me which knob is "correct" for the 71/72 model years? I don't have any other truck for reference and the knob was missing when I purchased the truck. I haven't been successful in finding a good interior photograph to show which style is right. Any one with a '72 4x4, np205 help me with this one? Thanks.

Middle picture, bottom row on the left, top picture bottom row on the right. That is the shift knob that is on my 72, it is all stock, so I assume it is correct. Here is a pic of my shift knob:

I have the same one as Bobalouie on my '72 K5. I replaced it with that wicked looking spike ball :metal: , but I'll look around to see if I cant find the stock one.
4x4Poet, lol, it's not as bad as it looks. The points on mine are more rounded off and it actually fits pretty well in the palm of my hand. |
Thanks for all the help. AK Bandit: if you find it and want to sell.....put a price on it and I'll take it off your hands.

You may want to check out e-bay as they seem to get listed oin there all the time

Phuloi68 - Thanks for the heads up on the Ebay listing. I was successful in winning the auction. Anyone need a four speed shift boot with trim ring, 4x4 shift boot with a tear (according to seller) and trim ring or a worn 4 speed shift knob? Had to buy the package deal to get what I wanted. :hm:
Link if anyone wants to see the extra parts I will soon have. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEBI%3AIT Thanks again! |
Glad you got it. When I was looking for one, they were going $25-$50 just for the knob. You should be able to find someone who needs the other parts and will give you something for them.
|
I could use the 4 speed shift ball. What do you want for it?
|
