what all would i need to put this in my k20? SM465/NP205... does it work? (i dont know what could go wrong with one?)

boraxman 06-16-2005 01:39 AM

Not sure, I know it came off a sm420 and the gears look fine, maybe someone else can say.

tnblazerk5 06-16-2005 01:49 AM

who made that? whats the writing on there say ? and if blue 71 dont take it, i might

JIMs70GMC 06-16-2005 05:30 AM

dana/ chelsea that would be a single speed unit turns one direction to drive a hydraulic pump. If it's for a sm420 then that's all it will fit as the sm465/np205 and np435 all have different drive gears. I have 2 in my garage now, 1 for a np435 and the other for a sm465 and the gears are just slightly different.

What would you do with it---really??

boraxman 06-16-2005 08:32 AM

It is the Dana/ Chelsea and I have the sm420 trans it came off.

JIMs70GMC 06-16-2005 11:49 AM

You could use the unit to drive a hydraulic pump for a dump bed or hydraulic winch. One board member(toolpimp) has one that operated a sprayer.
Oh I forgot to add that's a fair price I paid $75 and $100 for mine.

tnblazerk5 06-16-2005 12:07 PM

oh well i got a sm465 so count me out

so heres a ttt for ya

Blue_71 06-16-2005 12:13 PM

so it wont work with a SM465... i do have another question about it though-- is this the same kind of pto that runs a "pto winch" (im assuming it would be because you said hydralic winch jim)

im also going to have to pass though, your a little to far from me for me to ask about getting the SM420 too

Too bad I would throw the trans in for free :)

I wont ship it.

This is probably a stupid question, but would that work on a 2wd transmission?

1969 GMC 06-16-2005 02:47 PM

all SM420's were 2wd (had divorced t-cases behind them), so yes.

Robert1970C20rstbukt 06-16-2005 03:00 PM

Cool, thanks for the info. It really doesn't matter though, I'm putting a 465 in my truck.

Rod 06-16-2005 03:45 PM

Not so there 1969 GMC ..my 69 GMC 3/4 4x4 was a Rockwell T221 married to a SM420. Seems in Canada they built some using the older stock parts..my bother had a 69 3/4 4x4 GMC with a Rockwell T221 to SM465, also a married unit.

I can decode some Chelsea / Dana / Spicer PTO number too if someone has a problem with knowing what they will fit. But I only bothered to fihgure out what fits a SM 420 SM465 and NP 205. Anything else didn't matter to me..I have it written down somewhere. But it's mostly off the top of my head now too also.

1969 GMC 06-16-2005 04:49 PM

thanks for the heads up rod. my GMC had the 465/married 221 originally. always good to learn more stuff.

edit: even so, the pto's for 2wd and 4wd versions of the same tranny are the same. they usually just differ in output shafts and bearing retainers.

boraxman 06-16-2005 05:12 PM

Ya :but: does anyone want to buy it? :hm:

If you come and buy it I will throw in the sm420 for free! Really.

30 miles N. of Los Angeles

No shipping on trans, dont ask.

JIMs70GMC 06-16-2005 08:19 PM

The type of pto to drive a winch would have to be reversible. The pto above turns one direction and works by putting the tranny in neutral, push in the clutch, engaging the pto then releaseing the clutch.

boraxman 06-18-2005 11:21 AM

OFFERS?

Rod 06-18-2005 09:24 PM

Your almost right there Jims70GMC very often you see winches that need two way pto's...but...often you dont..hence the Holmes winches on the tow trucks..the winches are made to be reversible..all while the PTO remains turning in the same direction. Check out any Holmes 440 wreckers...thats how they work.
