Replacing Cab Mounts, any suggestions?
 

Hey guys,
I'm planning on changing out my sagging/cracked cab mounts on the 72 4x4. Anyone got any tricks for getting this done? I thought about using the floor jack to lift up the cab to replace the mounts. However it looks like to get the rear mounts out so that I can reuse the inner sleeve, I'll either have to jack the cab way up off the mount to remove it or drill out the rivets that hold on the mounting bracket to the frame and then replace the rivets with either grade 5 or grade 8 bolts. Any suggestions you guys got that have done this before would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, just jack 'er up. It is not that hard to do.

My jack wouldn't go high enough, so I had to take the air out of the tires too. Good ole redneck engineering!

Pretty easy if you can get all the hardware busted loose. Don't forget to loosen the radiator mounts first, even if you are not going to replace them. You will need the slack.

Also, if you have an auto, jacking the cab up WILL knock the truck out of "Park". Make sure you use blocks. I found this out the hard way.

put a brick on the jack and it'll give you another 12 inches or so of lift.

and possibly kill you when the brick breaks and the truck falls on you

Wood block and not a brick. Unless you are thick as a brick then when the truck falls on you, you will be flat as a pancake! Then it's eights and aces for you. Good call Aces!

Thanks guys for all the info! I intend on tackling this project in the next couple of days and I wasn't sure what I needed to do to get it done. Sounds like I can just unbolt the existing mounts and jack up the cab high enough to replace the old mounts. I just didn't want to find out the hard way that your not supposed to jack up the cab as you can tweek it and or bust out the glass, but since that's not the case, jacking up the cab works for me.

i don't know what kind of bricks you're using... but you're right you have to be careful but if you can jack it up an inch, that's all it takes to remove and replace the bushing. it helps i had a gutted interior because there's a bolt that is under the carpet, and the cab was lighter overall.

Just do the complete frame off restoration. It will be much more fun!!!! lol
