How High w/40s? (`72)
 

How much lift does it take to run 40" tires on a 67-72 truck?

At least 4.56 would be my guess. I've got 4.10's in my '69 and they seem to be correct for 35's. I had 3.73's in my first blazer with 35's and it was a bit sluggish. My '72 has stock 3.07's with 237/85/16 (about 31.5" tall) and it could probably stand to have seom 3.73's.

Are you talking lift or gears?

That`s funny.Bouncy,thanks for answering the question I didn`t ask.I don`t think I was going to ask,but maybe you know more than me.I have CUCV axles w/4.56 gears.Mudder67,12" you think?I`ll be building a long Stepside w/doublers.I want it to be B/A,but not sure I want that much lift.I`m thinking Swampers.I`ll look at sizes,maybe go down a notch in size.Then again,that would be B / A!!

special K, have you considered a 52" spring swap up front? it adds lift and more flex at the same time. i recently got a pair of 52's and have been thinking about using them, but pretty much my entire truck is still in the "planning" phase. there is lots of info on CK5 about this.

40x17 with 8. the 8" lift has settled a little bit since then. the owner of the tires used them on his truck with a 6" lift and a 3" body lift. he said it rubbed a little.

Mine rubs with mild flexing with 9 inches. My 38's are actually 38.2. The real question is are your 40's really measuring 40. Lots of tires don't meausure up as advertised.

Get some of those michellins that are mounted on 6.5" wide rims and measure 40" tall. You could probably get by w/ 8".

I would say about 8"-10" of lift would be good. Like 6" suspension and 3" body or all suspension if thats what you want. I got 39.5's with like 9" of lift and I got room for a little bit more rubber.

My 69 has 6" suspinsion and 2" body with 38.5" tires.Ihave no prblems with rubbing. :metal:

Everybody,this is good info.I believe I tryed a thread on 4wd/lift/tire fitment before.This is what I was after.

Well, if you decide you might be interested later just let me know. Those are 44 x 19.5 - 16.5 Boggers on my truck.

I you are looking for a tire fitment chart, I'm not sure I've ever seen one go back further than 1973 for Chevys.

depends, are you going pretty? or beater? i know plenty of guys running 38s on 4-6" of lift.

As 2wdBlazer said kind of depends on the tire. In general I would say that most 40's are actually in the 38" range. The Hawgs, Mudders and most of the Swampers apply. I had 38" (just over 36") Hawgs on my last 72 with an 8" lift they did rub when when getting rough and I had the back of the front fenders trimmed slightly. I would say you could get away with the 10" and minor trimming as long as you dont get to rough. The 38" Fun Country's I had on my 85 were as big as 40" Hawgs. I had a 10" lift on that and they did rub, it was mostly a pavement pounder though.

Also as another poster said the wheels will make a difference. Most all off the shelf 10" to 14" wheels will have a 3.5" to 4" backspace. Going with more that a 10" wide wheel will just make the interference problem worse when the wheels are turned.

speical-K. The kid I sold my 86 to put a set of 40's on it and took a corner to fast yesterday and rolled it. Looks like a basket case. Be carefull on how high you go. You know how the idiots in this state drive, they will cut you off in a minute.

Just fishing now.I`m just planning on building a truck I have as a long Stepside using a set of 4.56 1 ton axles with Tru-Trac/Locker,a 6.2 or 6.5 w/turbo(built to 300+hp/www.peninsulardiesel.com),205/203 doubler.I have all this laying around.I`ll fabricate what it needs from the frame-up.I want it to be everything I always wanted in a 4wd`72.I want it to be all that and look handsome,too.My version of a hot rod.

I like the looks of the long steps myself! Get yours done and it could inspire me to get mine above it's current 3" lift w/35s.

Good advise here on wheel and tire width. The wider you go, the more lift you will need. I'm running 8" suspension lift with 35's and it's not hard to make mine rub, because of the width.

Im doing the same thing useing a k30 with a 6.5 in it. I plan on using a 67-72 burb body.

Earl,sounds cool.I knew there`d be more than one answer.There`s alot of variables.You`ll never get this info from a suspension company on a chart.I just put this out for some "real-life" answers and figured it can help others out before dropping a wad on incompatable combos.It would make a good "Sticky" for the 4x4 section(HINT!),eh?
