Welcome from central ohio.

Yes, you'll need a new under dash and under hood harness made for the guages style dash. There are ways to flip some wires around... but from the sounds of your resto, that just won't do for you.
Don't be suprised if your fuel guage is dead now too. Mine spin 360 degrees a few times before a puff of smoke came out of it and the needle stopped. My friend found this so funny that he fell out of the truck laughing. I wanted to walk over there and kick him...but I guess looking back, it was kinda amusing.

i dont have a problem switching wires , i do have the harness that fits that type of gauge but it would be a lot easier to switch a couple wires around ,& so far i haven't seen or smelled smoke yet hopfully its still ok

the only info on this is showing me change from idiot light to gauge does any one have a dif site or help on going from 3 gauge to 6 gauge type

HotRodDad, the 3 gauge dash has idiot lights for temperature and oil. The six gauge actually has seven holes, but most do not have the tach in the middle large hole. Most do not have the vacuum guage in one of the smaller holes either. It really is more often a 5 gauge/7 hole dash...if that makes any sense.

I swapped over, but I bought new wiring harnesses for the underdash and engine compartment. Some of the vendors on the board here can supply you with them if you decide to go that route. I got mine through Ed at Mother Truckers www.mothertrucks.net

Hope that makes things as clear as mud.

The idoit light set up is a cluster with speedo , fuel gauge and in the center it would have the idoit lights. The cluster with gauges is a set up with speedo, fuel, oil, temp, batt. and may if you have the opt have tach, air or vaccum, or the rare speed warning speedo. Hope this helps. Lamar.

A little late, sorry. Lamar.

Do you have a wiring schematic for both types? That may help, that is if you can read a schematic, they are in a foreign language called electronics, LOL.
