Rear Tow Hooks
I've seen people talk before about rear tow hooks. What did rear tow hooks look like for our trucks? It seems like I've heard that they are different than front hooks.
Do they mount with two or three bolts? Do they mount to the bottom of the frame, or the side, like the front hooks? Does anybody happen to have a picture? Thanks. |
No pic's, but I would LUV to find some myself, I think they mostly came
on FORESTRY, PUBLIC SERVICE, and MILITARY versions of 4wd models ;) |
These have two bolts, I've also seen them with three. School buses commonly had them.

Get some Hummer H2 tow hooks and bolt them to your step bumper :D

Hey Bob, got any specs on those  |
What information are you looking for? I'm not at the same location as that truck right now but I can get measurements if you need them.

Length overall, Distance between bolt holes, Width overall, etc......... ;)
|
I should be able to get that for you by tomorrow evening.

Yes, please post the specs when you get them. Thanks Bob.

I picked these up on ebay for 10 bucks. They look pretty close. I bought them with the intention of using them on my Blazer as rear tow hooks.

I have a set that I pulled off the front of a 1966 Chevy C60 dumptruck, they look exactly like the rear mounted ones.
|
IIRC, the correct ones for the rear of our trucks have 3 bolt holes. Someone posted pics a long time ago, and I think they are also in the rear of my owner's manual under the optional equipment listing (if I could find the dang thing).

These are factory and not upfitter items? Those three-bolt hooks are generic heavy truck pieces. They are designed for top mounting. Some have a twist like our hooks to help retain the chain when off tension. Are there supposed to be holes in the frame for these hooks?
|
The ones like I bought are generic. I think these particular ones came off a Mack truck. I've seen them in 3 hole as well. They look like what you'd see on a school bus, etc. I was just curious how these generic ones compared to actual factory rear hooks.

No idea Special, but my rig has lost of OE holes back there :hm: |
Measurements on the rear hooks in the link above are:
Bolt center to center-4.25" Overall length-9" Height (for lack of a better word)-5" Width-approximately 3" (they curve outward) Tow hook dimensions are compliments of the wife, why she puts up with my antics, I have no clue! The RPO for Front Tow Hooks was V76 meaning they were available from the factory. I've never seen the RPO for Rear Tow Hooks which leads me to believe they were all either dealer-installed or installed by an upfitter like when this truck (62 W5000 NAPCO 6X6) was converted or by a coach builder in the case of school buses or they may have just been installed by a previous owner who bought them from the dealership or even from the source that supplied the dealership. Dealer-installed accessories will vary by year or supplier, this would explain the difference in tow hooks from year to year or region to region and would also explain the existence of an identical tow hook on another make of truck which in the case of this two-hole version is very common. Thanks Bob :metal:

Huskerboy2,,, the hooks you got are available from Northern tool for 24.00 a pair.
|
Actually, the ones from Northern Tool look a little more like the originals. They seem rounder.
