Texas safety inspection
 

I live in N. TX and need to get my 71 inspected. Everything works great. However, it has an open air filter element and headers. According to TX DPS website, it should have a "thermostatic" air cleaner? I got my 68 Camaro inspected with the same setup with no problems. Has anything changed I need to know about? My daily driver is a diesel truck and I only have to have working lights, brakes and wipers.

I can't imagine the inspection being a problem. Mine's got a fuel injection setup from an '87 Camaro so that ought to really throw them a curve when I get it inspected.

If my geography is correct, your in Collin county. I believe they have the stricter D/FW air standard, but since you have a vehicle that is over 25 yrs old you wont have a problem. My 71 has the exact same set-up. They never lifted the hood for my inspection here in Brazos co.:rolleyes:

I wouldnt think that you would have any problems with inspection. Next county over from me is where exhaust emmissions test start. :crazy:
So I cant really say for sure.

The air cleaner & heat tube should be their only gripe depending on how picky they are. Both of my 72`s have 98 vortec 350`s in them & I never have a problem with inspection.

All depends on your tester. I was failed for that in Bell county (non smog county) one day, but passed the very next day when I had another tester look it over.
Technicly, regardless of your county, FEDERAL law dictates it needs to be there.

have a working horn lights, high beams, brake lights, blinkers, emergency flashers, windshield wipers, and have some kind of bulge in your pipes ie. a glass pack or muffler it doesnt matter but that right there should pass you thats all i have ever had oh and make sure your seatbelt is bolted in to. I have never had problems with these older trucks in north texas

you have some easy to get along with inspectors then...the list is rather extensive, even for the old junk like these.

i got mine inspected last month, didnt have any trouble at all. they did look under the hood but didnt say anything about the open air cleaner.

It lists everything the inspector looks at. On the left side drop down menu pick "Pickup, Panel,or Truck under 80"" then hit the GO button.

Technically, you do need to have the closed air cleaner, but I never failed one for open element cleaner.

I have had them not pass me for an open element air cleaner. I do also have an original closed element cleaner without heat riser tube that I use. It really just depends on the person doing the inspection.

As has been said above, it all depends on the inspector. An inspector at work failed his mom's car for torn wiper blades. If you find someone that is into the old iron you are probably good (and keep using them). Good Luck.

I just had mine inspected last weekend. I think the inspector was still flustered from having a hard time with the 3-on-the-three to worry about the exhaust leak after the muffler on mine. He was actually supposed to fail it due to the patch (now that I have read the requirements posted above). All other items on my truck were sound.

I live in Harris County (Houston) where they are pretty strict, but like everyone else says it really depends on the individual inspector.

actually, as long as the leak is past the bed, that is all that matters. Your pipes don't even have to come out from under the truck...just past the back wall of the cab.
