Gas tank fabrication questions
 

I'm eliminating the main tank behind the seat of my '66 to make room for my long legs, I have the original equipment dealer installed duel saddle tanks and all the mounting hardware. Everything is there to make this all work, except I'll never know how much gas I have in either of the two saddle tanks. I guess the way it worked back in '66 was to run the saddle tanks dry, then switch over to the main tank.

My solution is to fabricate a sending unit that will fit in each saddle tank and be compatable my stock 30ohm gauge. I already have the fuel line outlets with the filter socks on the end in each tank so I probably don't need to use the one on the sending unit. The OEM tanks are aprox. 9 inches deep, 14" wide and 35" long with all right angles (rough calculations: that's about 19 gallons each) what I'm thinking of doing is maybe going with a repro 30ohm sending unit from another vintage Chevy - like a passenger car that uses a flat tank with roughly the same depth. Then wire the two tanks to an old OEM aux gas tank rocker switch and hook the plumbing up to an electic fuel solenoid valve, both from a '73 or newer truck and mount the switch under the dash so I could switch from tank to tank and get an accurate reading.

Has anybody done anything like this before?

Does anybody know what year/model of car would work for the sending unit?

Does anybody know if the late model gas tank switch will work with the 30ohm gauge?
