New frame or just a back half...

4 Attachment(s)
Well after alot of mesuring and checking I have decided my frame if to far out of wack to keep it as is. It started about 6yrs ago when I cut the rear frame off and stepted it it up 2" to get the frame to lay flat. But thios also ment I needed to notch the frame and then that was not enough so I body dropprd it. Then after moving twice I have finally had some time to re-visit where I had left off and that was aligning the body. It turns out that by not doing the work in a jig I ended up twisting and tweaking the rear frame. So now I ether need to get a new frame or cut the rear off and just build a new one from scratch. What have other people done for back halfs? Or should I start looking for a new stock SWB frame and do it right this time with a frame table?

First of all, love the truck! I'm doing something similar to my bedfloor.
If the rest of the frame is fine.. I say backhalf it !

Do you have some pics to share of your ride? Are the 22" in yet?

Also does anyone have a factory frame scematic (sp?) that gives all the frame details and dementions?

I have seen a link posted to frame dimensions before.I`d back 1/2 it,too.Keeping an eye out for a frame`s not a bad idea either.Unfortunately, that`s one advantage the east has over CA.I can find junker shortbed all over the place,I just have to get western sheetmetal(disadvantage).I doubt alot of shortbeds make it to "junk" status out there unless they`re wrecked. They`ve alway been so popular.I had a`70 back1/2ed by a race car fabricator. It started out as a 3/4t big block.Ended up with a pro-street shortbed.

That just might work! I think I will build the back half still but my front half has had some tweaking done to it as well back in the day. This way I could start off new and keep it all inline from that point. I priced up material today to build a frame table for my shop, that should help out with alot of projects I take on.

Bowtie67 Love the Tarantula Trans mount..

That was built to mount my 700R4 and also give the exhaust a place to hide as the ground jumped up at it.

Once I decide on new rims (20/22's) they will be fore sale! The rears are 11x17 and the fronts are I think 9x17 and I do not remember the back spacing.

If you get that LWB frame and back-half it, we (the board members) require a detailed build-up thread. It's in the rules... look it up!

I'm not sure it matters to you (I think so, or wouldn't post this), but those specs are for 73-87 trucks.

Re: New frame or just a back half...

Yes I will at least back half it and their will be a build thread at that time. Here is a link with alot of pics to another build I have going on in my spare time. This may clue people in to what my screen name means!

That's sweet. We race cars, so I hear what you are saying about spare time. Watched the rock crawler at the Carlisle All Truck Nationals last year - fun stuff.

Re: New frame or just a back half...

I will try to put up some more pics... no real progress. I'm going backwards and taking the drivetrain out to shave/finish/Tub my firewall and cleanup my airlines etc.. It was kinda put together just to "try it" So now I'm going to go back over the truck. Love the rally's! I saw them somewhere in a 20" and my rims were suppose to be here Mon. but the wheel mfg. is being kinda slow.

I know what you mean about putting it together just to try things out. That sounds like my last 4-5yrs with this one project. Although moving it 3 times non running and in pieces de-motivates you a bit as well. But as soon as I finish a customers vehical that is in my shop it will be time for my 71 to get finished. Then some day past that my rock crawler!
