2WD C10 to 4WD frame
 

After contemplating and asking around, I have had alot of "friends" and "experts" tell me I ought to look at putting my 1968 C10 stepside body on a 4WD frame. I have seen a few of these conversions and I really like the thoughts of it. I have been told several things:

* Use a Chevy or GMC 4WD frame and runnig gear from 1967 till 1972 and the body is almost a "bolt on" affair. These are really hard to come by.

*Use a newer Chevy or GMC 4WD frame and running gear and it will mean I will have to do alot of futzing around with the body mounts and such.

*Use a Jeep J10 Frame and running gear and there is also body mount issues.

I know that there is no better set of experts than on this board so.......what's the advice? I need to know the best setup with the least amount of fabrication.

I haven't done a conversion myself, but I would list the options in this order;

1) Try to find a SWB 4x4 frame.

2) Find a LWB 4x4 frame and shorten it.

3) Use a 73 + frame and fab up new body mounts.

4) Jeep frame ????

SWB 4x4 frames are hard to find but there out there. There was one for sale on here this week but the front tips of the frame were cut off. Looked like a solid frame, and were it was cut I think wouldn't be to bad to fix. Cut the tips off of another frame and weld them on. ( Was cut just behind were the bumper mounted ) Just my 2 cents !!!

I put a 68 C10 cab on a 70 4x4 frame. I used poly bushings from JC Whitney. There were no mounting problems that I remember. This was back in 1991.
Thought of something else. It is easier if the cab has a bolt in, or big, transmission hump.

I'd use your original frame and put the 4x4 front axle under it. Just about any D44 or Corp 10 bolt will work.
It'd probably be easier if you can find some 67-72 front spring hangers/shackles, but 73-87 parts would work also.
Like mentioned above the high hump floor is better.
Is your truck a coil spring rear?
I've always wanted to put a 3/4 ton coil spring suspension under my 72 and then mount the rearend under the control arms to make it 4x4 height, (or closer to the right height anyway).
