New truck!!!

Here's some photos of my newest aquisition, a former army 72 chevrolet shortbox stepside. It went from the army to wilton, nd, as their city truck for tarring. How many ppl have seen the overflow for the radiator? Also, are those 16in. rims original style, and are they hard to find?

I have already put a tilt in it, along with a black interior and rally wheels. Other plans are to put new tires on it, along with new exhaust as there is no exhaust right now, it fell off. thanks for looking

Great find.

How did you happen to get a hold of that one? Auction sale?

It's funny that they'd put a 350 in a short-step Army truck.

Re: New truck!!!

Well, the back story is this, a guy bought it, through sealed bid, from wilton, then he couldn't afford it, so Chris from C&C parts in Oakes got it. Well, my brother happened to talk to Chris a couple days after he got it, and Chris wanted to know if my brother was interested. So made a trip to Bismarck, where the truck was at the time, and ended up buying it. It is a pretty solid truck, but will need some work. Have a whole new front clip for it, as well as stepside fenders for the rear. For right now, though, it will just be driven as a daily driver.

pretty cool truck, if I say so myself. Moderatly loud, too. 68350 fired it up for me when he got it. Not a bad truck, overall, pretty straight and would be a good start if he wanted (read as: had time) to restore it. Some rare options, too.

Nice find! Looks pretty good from the pictures, much better then most of the unrestored trucks in my area. Is it hard to find swb trucks in N.D/S.D? How about the road salt/rust issues? Your state is close to me..might be a good thing to hunt for trucks there sometime?

kind of, to most your Q's. It'd be better to just have some fellow board members let you know what's around, than waste the gas and drive down here just to look. (now if you're coming for something, like visiting some board members, that's a different story)

As for the SWB trucks, you don't see them half as much as longboxes (old farmtrucks theory: most farmers would rather have had the longbox for the farm) but there are a few around. Like 68350, his brother's (beautiful) 70 is a shorty-stepper, as is that one, and his 68 GMC. There are a few around, you just don't see them AS often as the longboxes (and as for longbox stepsides, those you don't see very much at all around here)

I have a 72 short stepside truck that came with the 16" wheels. It's on the option sheet.

Western ND is the place to look for rust-free trucks. The don't get as much snow out there.

Re: New truck!!!

the overflow is interesting, it has a hose that runs under the radiator to the overflow, which is mounted on the drivers side right next to the radiator on the radiator support

Re: New truck!!!

the thing on the roof was the citys light bar. As far as shortys locally, i know where one shortbox is sitting in grass, and one that runs around town. I know a guy that has like 20 of them sitting in a field, but can't remember if he has any shortys. As far as trucks around the area, I would venture to say i know where 95% of them are in the area, and if they are for sale or not. I have lots of time on my hands. thanks for the compliments

haha, yeah right! look at my truck! she's and old farmtruck, my 69. Rust in mos everything except the driver's fender. That's good. Usual rust under battery in fender, battery tray is rotted, inner fender under there was gaping, the grille support had a big hole in it, rockers are eaten kinda bad, cab corners are gone, floors rusty (but only a few holes, but all rusty) and I'd bet the supports under there are rotting, the kickpanel's gone on the part where it's connected to the floor... the box is okay, for rust. Unusuable since the back's crushed in.

Pretty fun truck when it was used for that, I'd bet (I didn't barely drive it maybe 50 miles total for a year, and now it's getting torn down.) Going to use the fenders, the (non-original) 350 and the original 4speed, steering column for a while, and not too much else, other than the wiring harnass, a few odds and ends off that and the cab, and that about sums it up. New cab, new frame/box, new grille support, etc. I guess you could say my 69 is being delegated to being a "parts truck" now. :(

Otherwise, I guess a lot of trucks around this end of the state need rockers/cab corners and the (almost) mandatory battery-rotted fender patch. I've seen some good and bad ones.

Well rust or not it is good to hear that there are some swb trucks left down there. The Dakotas and Montana is not a far drive for someone who grew up in Saskatchewan. We drive ALOT here. Once again, congrats on the nice truck.

Plans are to change the grille and front bumper to a very nice one and chrome bumper, and to change the tired 350 for a 402 from my longhorn.
