Smoothing out the "rough" texture of a dash bezel to paint
 

Anyone experiment with smoothing out the rough finish that the 67-72 bezels have? I am trying to figure the best way to smooth the texture without ruining the chrome surrounds. By just sanding it, I would be afraid of having an uneven surface from sanding by hand. I was thinking of finding a self leveling epoxy that would stick, and that I could prime and paint. Fiberglass resin is another thought.

I want the bezel to match my color, I think the rough finish will mess up the pearl effect in the paint therefore making it look a different tone orange. I want it to be nice and smooth. Any of you guys done this, or know of an epoxy or other material I could pour onto the bezel rough area to smooth it out (hope that makes sense). I have a couple messed up bezels I can practice with.

Tape it up and spray it with high build primer.

I thought of that, but you still have to be VERY carefull to sand with a consistant pressure as to not have it turn out wavy. I am looking for alternatives to that. As far as the chrome goes, I will be using liquid mask so I don't need to worry about tape.

You could try getting one of those ugly wood grain stickers, and shooting it before sticking it to the inst panel bezel.

Actually Andy has a good idea there. I was thinking maybe you could make a thin sheet metal template first. The only other thing that might work is to to take a spreader and give it a skim coat of body filler, prime and paint!.
