Ho72 drum removal
I have a 72 1 ton dually (wrecker) with the Eaton HO72 rear. How are the rear drums removed? Are the drum and hub one unit, meaning the axle has to be pulled or does the drum slide over the hub as in conventional cars and trucks.

First, you have to unbolt and remove the axle shaft. Then, within the hub is a retaining nut that has to be removed, requires a hub socket. Then you can slide the drum off, and smash your toe.
That's how I did it anyway. |

Thanks, I thought the axle had to come out. Didn`t realize there was a nut there but make sense there would be.
Where can I get a socket for it? And reading the posts, the drums and shoes are hard to get? Off topic: the bench seat in these 1 tons...does the back rest move forward to get behind the seat? I can`t find any levers so I think it might be stationary. Mark |

Good luck finding drums..........I've been looking for one for over a year. I got the shoes and wheel cylinders at NAPA.

the drums were discontinued in the late 70's from what i been told.
It would LITERALLY be cheaper to get an axle out of a newer truck in the junk yard. |

72 seat is stationary.Drums are unavailable unless you can luck into one somewhere. Some farm units trucks dont have that many miles...and should be within tolerance. But those sometimes never had a brake job either and are driven into the ground.

FUNNY STORY JUST TO SHOW WHAT A PARTS PACKRAT THAT I REALLY AM. I JUST MOVED ACROSS COUNTRY A FEW MONTHS BACK. I HAD TO THIN DOWN MY STASH OF PARTS. THE LAST MONTH BEFORE I MOVED I WAS LITTERLY GIVING PARTS AWAY. I WAS SUPER BUSY & HAD NO TIME TO PACK & SHIP BIG PARTS.3 DAYS BEFORE I LEFT I TOOK 11 DOORS TO THE CRUSHER. THESE WERE ALL DOORS FROM THE DESERT & WERE PRETTY NICE. WELL I HAD 3 T-400s BEING REBUILT TO TAKE WITH ME. (NO POINT IN HAULING JUNK TRANNYS OVER 2400 MILES RIGHT?) I WAS PICKING THEM UP AT MY FRIENDS LOCAL TRANNY SHOP & HE SAID TO ME.. I JUST TOWED IN THIS OLD MOTOR HOME, WITHOUT A TITLE & AM GOING TO PART IT. WILL I LOOK AT IT & IDENTIFY WHAT YEAR IT IS. I LOOKED AT IT... IT WAS AN OPEN ROAD CAMPER BUILT ON A C-30 1 TON TRUCK. IT HAD 42,000 ORIGINAL MILES & LOOKED PERFECT. THE DOORS WERE THE NICEST THAT I'VE EVER SEEN, & IT HAD A HO-72 DUAL WHEEL REAR END. THE SAME AS MY 69 WRECKER. ANYWAY I BOUGHT THE COMPLETE REAR END & BOTH DOORS FOR NEXT TO NOTHING. (KIND OF A GOING AWAY PRESENT) I JUST PAID FOR ONE OF HIS GUYS TO PULL EM FOR ME AS I WAS KINDA BUSY:rolleyes: . SO I HAD TO MAKE ROOM FOR A BIG REAREND & A PAIR OF DOORS. AFTER I MOVED HERE (KY.) I BOUGHT ANOTHER 1 TON (STAKE BED). IT'S A 71, ONE OWNER TRUCK WITH 86,000 MILES. SO YES.. I HAVE A SPARE. I WAS ABLE TO GET SHOES , A HARDWARE KIT , BEARINGS & SEALS FROM NAPA LAST SUMMER. I HAD THE GREATEST NAPA CREW IN THE WORLD IN CARSON CITY NV. THE ONLY THING THEY DIDN'T HAVE WAS THE DRUMS. SORRY FOR THE LONG POST, BUT IT'S THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT & I COULDN'T SLEEP. :) :) JOHN

My 72 wrecker only has 19,000 miles on it so i`m sure the drums are in good shape along with the rest of the truck. A local autobody shop bought the truck new in 72 and only used it locally it was taken off the road in 86 while they painted it for sale when times were slow then put it in the back lot (without any lights and trim) once things picked up. I bought it last august for $500 and put it on the road resently. I checked out everything but the rear brakes, but I figured since the front disk pads had plenty of meat on them, I guessed the rear would have also. Since getting it I`ve: replaced the clutch and the keyway for the PTO (there`s no idle control for the winch and it TORE the clutch up and rounded the PTO keyway) Replaced the split rims with one peice rims. Replaced the lights, dash pad, driverside window and threw a rattle can paint job on it( it was painted in the 70`s shagadelic style, it was like a disco on wheels:rolleyes: ) Changed the oil and threw in a HEI distibutor. People can`t believe a wrecker would only have 19k on the odometer. well Im convinced of this becalse: (other then being told buy the orig owner) I have all the paper work to the truck the clutch pad is not very wore the cab is in great shape with min underbody rust. Still has the floor and the sound deadening material between the floor and the rubber mat. The seat is perfect except for one rip due to age and sun. it still used the original spark plug wires and has the original spiral front shocks. And of course the front brake pads are in good condition. The pads didn`t have the clip that go into the pistion to hold the pad to the caliper, I don`t know if this was a factory thing or since I only dismantled one side (to repack the bearings untill I didn`t have a socket large enough for the spindle nut) and I dropped and lost the clip or if it was never there. how do i identify my axle to see if its a HO72? its 1955.5 1ton dually.
stock. i want to get 4.?? gears. also-anyone convert this vintage to front disc? |

There are a few threads on here about mounting discs on the ho72 rear ends. I bet someone on here rembers the links or you might try doing a search.

i wasnt clear enough.
ive got stock straight axle front(not 4x4) and want to convert to disc on the front only. dont need rear disc. 8 lug with the dually adapter for teh front 1ton hub. pics on request. thansk! |

I was replying to nl68nova. Sorry for the confusion ccpanel. I really dont deal with anything older than about 63 chassis wise. Sorry. Yes I read that yours, ccpanel, is a 55.5 1 ton dually. I am not familiar with front discs for a 1ton that old. I dont knoe if the companies that make the conversion for the 55.5 1/2 ton make them for a 1 ton. I am pretty sure that yours is a ho72, I think they were around then. The best way I have found to tell is to to look at the center csection. Does it look like say the axle on a big rig or a dump truck? Is it round , the housing made of sheet steal, has a removable cover, and the pumpkin drops out like a ford 9". If so then I would say yes. Here is a pic of the ho52/72 in my brown trailer. Not sure of which one it exactly is but they do look similar.

Aaron, that is a 52, it's a 3/4 ton frame... coil springs. All one tons had leafs.

There was a 3/4 ton suburban in one of the magazines a few years back that was a 3/4 ton with a ho72. So I guess it was an option. They had it rebuilt.
The main reason I posted the picture was for the center section. I know the look similar. The pic was mainly for ccpanel. Hay did you guys check out the missing u-bolts. Previous owner cut the ubolts off and welded the ends in the sadles. What a da! he also took the nut and washer off the yoke. So the yoke is just sitting on the pinion. Yheah I know the one tons had leafs only. But like I said it was mainly a picture for a perspective of what the ho52/72 axles look like. Ghetto superman thanks. That is one heavy puppy and it was what I had lying around. It does have a panard bar now on it but that is another story. Oh by the way finger should never be used to line up panard bar hole on frame. Dont ask. Aaron |

Hay Longhorn Man. Check out the october 2001 issue of classic trucks magazine. Turn to page 34-44 and they show a rehab of a HO72 in a 72 3/4 ton suburban with coil springs. This is where I got the information that some 3/4 tons came with the HO 72 axle.

Deffinently a ho72 ccpanel. And ccpanel what I said was that the places that sell or make the kits for the half tons might make a kit to put 3/4 1 ton discs for your 1 ton that still has 8 lug rotors. 1969 gmc, I think the center sections are different also. When I looked up parts for the axle on my trailer they have one part # for gasket for the ho52 center section and access cover and a different part # for gaskets for the ho72.

the magazine is wrong, 72 were in one tons, 52 was in 3/4 ton. As for parts interchangability, I've heard it go both ways, all the same, and some the same.

Not trying to hijack but this thread made me think of something. My dad has a 72 chassis and the axle looks like that but I don't think it has a removable cover on the rear side. What kind of axle could it be if it is such thing?
