bed rails
What is the best way to remove and mount side rails to an existing bed?

Re: bed rails
i'm assuming our refering to the aluminum caps they make for protecting the top edge of your bed sides.
i've seen eveything from doubble sided tape to large eye bolts. it really depends on what you're going for. looks or functionality. if it's looks then some quality doubble sided tape/foam might do the trick but if your going for function then large eye bolts in the stake pockets might be the direction you want to go. ondrew |
Re: bed rails
I`m assuming you mean the rails that mount on top of the bedsides,as offered through the dealer accessory book. They mount by drilling holes at the mounting locations and running a sheetmetal screw into the body. You could drill through, then use flat or ovalhead machine screws, washers, and lock-nuts.

Re: bed rails
Actually they are the side rails that hold the wood of the bed to the body. These are the stainless steel rails that mount on the bed sides and run at 90 degree angles to the oak, they seem to be possibly tack welded into place however, I dont know. I am redoing the bed and need to remove the existing ones to replace them with new stainless.

Re: bed rails
They are spot welded to the bed. If you can't see the spot welds, you can stick a large screwdriver or something similar under the rail and push it away from the bed, you should be able to tell where it's spot welded after that. You can drill or grind them out.

Re: bed rails
This may help. http://www.mar-k.com/54-72anglestrips.pdf Let us know what you find. Originally the angle strips were steel, spot welded to the bedside about every 3 inches. Stainless angles are not original. There are any number of ways they could be attached.
