VIN DeCODER HELP

I need some help decoding a VIN #CE234SZ71803 its a 1970 GMC with a Bigblock I think its a 402, or 396, but the little old lady I bought it from says its a 454c.u. her husband bought it new in 1970 its a Custom Model pickup with factory. A/C, PB, PS, Cruise Control. She only wanted 800.00 so i bought it and drove it 750 miles home no problems. Im trying to get the engine size and see if anyone can tell me about it by the VIN number i got the first 4 digits then it does not make sense from any of the decoders i found online? Can anyone figure it out, thanks!!

Welcome to the board from South Mississippi! Try pm'ing Rod (he's the GMC vin expert). If it's the stock engine it should be a 402 (or maybe 396). You can also try running the numbers on the engine at www.mortec.com

it all makes sense except the S part if its a 70 the s should be a zero

Re: VIN DeCODER HELP

CE234SZ71803

C= Conventional cab
E = eight cyl
2 = 3/4 ton gvw range
34 = Wideside / fleetside box
S = St Loius assembly plant
Z = 1970
71803 is sequence number

It's a 70 gmc 3/4 ton and if it has a BB it came with a 396 / 402.
Sounds like a lot of truck for price I'd say with all those options especially, and you drove it home!!! cant find that here, good deal for you.

Get the numbers off of the VIN pad on the block and I'll tell you what the engine is. You'll find the VIN pad just forward of the passenger cylinder head even with the mating surface. You'll probably need to wipe it off or gently scrape it to remove the oil and/or paint. Let me know what you find and I can almost certainly tell you what it is. Dean

no one has been able to prove an original 454...and GM says they never did it, so I'll say it isn't original.. .that or it isn't a 454.

Re: VIN DeCODER HELP

My original literature doesn't list the 454 as an option. BUT ... with the alpha code off of the block I can certainly tell you what the block came from. My guess is that the ladys' husband replaced the engine at some point in the trucks life. Maybe he wanted more cubic inches when the original engine got tired. Dean

Model number is this on my Service Parts Identification sticker

KE10734

So I searched the place for some assistance.

I find this link http://67-72chevytrucks.com/Chevyear.html

If I follow the model number section...the 3 in my model number does not make sense as this is supposed to be the model year.

Also..What is a "cab to axle dimension?"

Here is my sticker

The model number identifies just a few things that the vin dosent.
K = 4x4
E = 8 cyl
1 = 1/2 ton gvw
07= 42 inches....cab to rear axle dimension....so its a short wheel base.
34= fleetside box

I can tell its a Chev by the 07...if it was a GMC it would have been 57 instead of 07.
So your model number basically gives you the wheel base and box type that the vins typically dont. :fb:

Thats a hard find..4x4 short box 8 cyl with AC..nice start...Id like it myself.

And I am its second owner.

Thanks for the decoding.

Now I just have to clear all the red neck stuff off of it.
