Stupid questions about my Longhorn
Ok, trying o get back in the swing of things... my truck has got the factory oil bath aircleaner, can I just swap that out for a "standard" air cleaner and replace the tubes with breathers? Really don't understand the concept except it does what it says..makes for an oil bath of the motor..is there any benefit one way or the other?

Re: Stupid questions about my Longhorn
Yes you can swap it out for an after market cleaner--as long as it fits the carb throat properly.

Re: Stupid questions about my Longhorn
In 1968 the Society Of Automotive Engineers (SAE) published a report #680536 titled “Ingested Dust, Filters, and Diesel Engine Ring Wear”. They used a diesel engine with radioactive piston rings to monitor radiation in the oil to examine rate of wear of the piston rings. They carefully fed abrasive dust into both oil bath and pleated paper air cleaners. Rate of piston ring wear was excessive with the oil bath whereas with the dry type pleated paper element the wear was almost completely eliminated ONCE a cake of dust was covering the element. Slightly dirty elements filter better than new clean elements. Of course there is a point where dirt becomes restrictive. If anyone is interested in obtaining this report, it’s still available from the Society Of Automotive Engineers website. The bottom line is - if you care anything about your engine, don’t ever use an oil bath air cleaner.
