It means short fleetside,as comparing to a short step bed.Wide=Fleetside, then there is just the stepside.
Short Wide Box is shown below, its a pic of my truck bed on my swb 4x4 Attachment 242793 |
Re: Short Wide Box
Can anyone authoritatively say that SWB stands for "Short Wide Bed" as opposed to "Short Wheel Base" when it comes to these trucks?
In virtually every other context that I've come across, SWB and LWB stand for short & long wheel base. I understand the desire to make a distinction between fleet- and step-side beds, but I don't think that's the original connotation of the abbreviations. |
Re: Short Wide Box
all my life, SWB ment short wheel base... and LWB was long wheel base. I had never head SWB meaning wide... never even heard of a bed refered to as wide or narrow till I came here.
|
Re: Short Wide Box
:agree: SWB short wheel base. Short and wide is a nick name. :metal:
BTW Longhorn Man what would you call yours ELWB Extra long wheel base. lol |
Re: Short Wide Box
To me,swb means short wheel base and lwb means long wheel base.I put that in my sig under that meaning, although currently both are "wide beds" to those that go by that abreviation. But they mean the wheel base in my signature, atleast

Re: Short Wide Box
Yes...I also have understood that SWB...was Short Wheel Base and LWB meant Long Wheel Base.
I have seen Short Wide a few times as well...and I guess it is a slip of the mind... Tim |
Re: Short Wide Box
For me the acronym SWB meant Short Wheel Base. If one was to refer to a Short wide it would stated as "short, wide". But that's just me.

Re: Short Wide Box
SWB= Short Wheel Base, LWB= Long Wheel Base Thats the way I have heard it for the past 31 years..

Re: Short Wide Box
It really doesn`t matter.I always can tell what a person means whichever way it`s used.Hasn`t anyone ever seen an abbreviation stand for more than one thing? What does USMC stand for? What`s USN?How about USAF?So,that must mean USA stands for The Army, right?Besides,United States Of America would be USOA,right? When you go to court does the judge give you a "P"eanut "B"utter & "J"elly sandwhich or "P"robation "B"efore "J"udgement?

Re: Short Wide Box
Right around here "Wheel Base"
|
Re: Short Wide Box
Since my stepside is a SWB I assume it means short wheel base.:D
|
Re: Short Wide Box
Look at 1tons that come cab`n`chassis...no bed. They come in SWB (60"CA) and LWB (84"CA).

Re: Short Wide Box
Here we go again. This is an old one that comes to surface every so often.
While it's true that the manufacturers use SWB as an acronym for "short wheel base" the term "short wide bed" has been used to to distinguish a short wheel base truck as fleet side rather than stepside in the South for many years. Where I grew up the majority of the short bed trucks were stepsides. Looking back I realize they were probably 67-72 GM trucks. When the 73-87 trucks came along the most popular one to fix up was a "short wide bed". We probably called it that because we didn't readily know the term "fleetside". It may not be the correct term, but it certainly is one that was used by many when I was in high school. |
Re: Short Wide Box
Yeah,so you have a swbwb,right?Doh!
|
Re: Short Wide Box
No, just a short wide bed...DOH
|
Re: Short Wide Box
Just had a spare monkey wrench to through in,lol.I agree w/N2TRUX.Isn`t the english language already full of doubles? You know live/live,etc.Like I said, either way I always seem to know what they mean. It`s only in print and the rest of the content usually defines it.We never say "SWB" when we`re talking, right?

Re: Short Wide Box
When I sell a truck in the local paper or thrifty, I use The SWB term and never, not once has anyone asked me if it was a fleet or stepside. I guess around here people just assume short wide.
Until recently the only time I used the word fleet was when describing a non-cameo 57-59 chevy truck. |
Re: Short Wide Box
I agre with wheelbase.Bed width is step or fleet.JMHO
|
Re: Short Wide Box
Until I found this board a few months back, I'd never heard the term "short wide box"...
Maybe it's a Texas thing...:) |

Re: Short Wide Box
I have lived in the South all my life and have NEVER heard a fleet referred to as a short wide bed.
SWB and LWB has always been used to refer to wheel base, regardless of the bed. |
