Removing the 350
 

Ok I have the rented cherry picker here and I am ready to start to pull a motor. I have everything unhooked except the carb,tranny,heater hoses and I need to move the electrical. Also when do I unscrew the bolt from the tower to the mount? When I get int engine on the chain and pulled up some?

Anytime that is handy. It will go nowhere until you lift it up. It also will make it easier to remove if you remove the starter (wiil not have lift it as high to bring it forward.

i just pulled my small block, i removed the trans 1st, unhooked everything and lifted the engine out in 5 minutes.

Tranny will be staying in. Just the engine is coming out.

if your leaving the trans in should be a piece of cake. id undo the mounts b4 you put tension on it...

Just for giggles, verify that the trans mount bolts are actully there. (don't ask me how I know that this is important):lol: :lol: :lol:

yes...very important to make sure the tranny is mounted in place.

Something to keep in mind, (for next time) most rental places will offer a 2 hr or 4 hr rental at a reduced rate. So if you woulda had everything ready, you coulda rented the hoist, pulled it out, returned the hoist, and saved some bucks.

put a jackstand under the front of the tranny dont let it hang off of the mount of it will probably rip the mount in half and end up laying on the floor

^My thoughts exactly. Also take a piece of baling wire and put it through the two holes in the front of the tranny to keep the torque converter in place.

man i'm in the junk bussiness and i pull engs all the time and trust me bring the trans with it trust me its a ***** to aline all the bolts and to get the shaft into place and plus when its time to put the eng and trand back in is goise in all in one time remmber to drain all the oil befor you take eng and trans out cus it tends to make a mess

I agree with most of what stsalvage says, but to line the engine and tranny back up all you need is a couple of long 3/8's bolts (I used starter bolts cuz I had them, but they're not cheap). Cut the heads off of the bolts and use a grinder to square the ends some (just enough to be able to turn with a pair of pliers). Put them in the bottom bellhousing bolt holes and use them to line the tranny and engine up. Then you can start the bolts in the next hole up. Granted I've never done this putting the engine in with the tranny in place, but I've used it several times to stab the tranny with the engine in place.:D

I've always pulled them one at a time personally. Stabbing the engine with long bolts with the head cut off is just as easy as doing the tranny to the engine.
just becouse of the fact that you'll never get all the tranny oil out is reason enough for me to drop the tranny on it's own.
