trans removal - HELP!!!
Well, my transmission gave up over the weekend and is time to rebuild. How is the easiest way to drop the trans? Unhook T-case or drop it with the trans? Thanks for any help. Oh yeah, it's a 72 K20 with TH350 and NP205 and 4" lift.

Re: trans removal - HELP!!!
If you don't have a good trans jack, then you had better separate the 2. You have to pull them apart anyways to have it rebuilt
|
Re: trans removal - HELP!!!
if you pull them apart, you can man-handle them out. if you leave them together, you need a jack to get them out...
|
Re: trans removal - HELP!!!
i take mine out seperate....and i still use a jack. I made a fixture that fits my jack that holds the transfer case.

One of the handest things i ever built was this trans a transfercase stands for my 3 ton jack.
I have one built for the sm465 and 205 transfercase thats out on lone right now.I just take angle iron and weld it were it needs to go to for support. Then one just has a round stock welded to the end for auto trans. There to good i have a hard time keeping track of them from everyone coming to get them to borrow. Cool idea, better to use the mind than break your back!

Re: trans removal - HELP!!!
My tranny fixture looks alot like that. But my TC jig is smaller so i can get up close to the crossmember and still balance the akward thing on the jack. And it has a angle iron "bridge" welded to one end to hold the driver side of the TC up.
I also cut the heads off some 3/8 bolts and put a point on them for line up dowels.:) |
Re: trans removal - HELP!!!
How did you make out ?
|
Re: trans removal - HELP!!!
I used an engine hoist. Went in through the passenger side. It was totally painless. Easy one man opperation.

Re: trans removal - HELP!!!
Mine is a manual trans, but it should work with the slush box too.

Re: trans removal - HELP!!!
Well, I got it done easier than expected. I put a floor jack (and block of wood) under the T-case cross member, leaving it attached to T-case. I unbolted the cross member from the frame and pulled the T-case straight back from the trans. I rolled the jack slowly and the T-case stayed on the jack and out of the way for trans removal. I had a block of wood on the oil pan to keep weight off the motor mounts. I then removed the trans just like a 2wd - lowering it with another jack. Thanks for the input and I'm back on the road again!!!

Re: trans removal - HELP!!!
I am having a really hard time getting my SM465 tranny out. I think I have everything disconnected: front and rear drive shafts, Cross member unbolted (trying to remove the transfer case and tranny together) Speedo cable is off, two other electrical wire plugs disconnected, the shift lever is removed and all four bolts from the bell housing to the engine are out. I just need to slide it backwards to replace the clutch but I can barely budge it. I have three floor jacks to support everything and tried raising an lowering the everything to get it to move but nothing is working. Any ideas? I think I'll separate the tranny and transfer case and maybe that will help.

Re: trans removal - HELP!!!
Did you remove the two bolts holding the 205?There is a bracket mounted on the pass side frame rail that holds the two bolts.
|
Re: trans removal - HELP!!!
I don't see the bolts you are referring to. Unless you mean the two that bolt the cross member to each frame rail (drivers and passengers sides)? The transfer case appears to be free. My transfer case is a New Process Gear 208 so maybe that's the difference.
|
Re: trans removal - HELP!!!
Thats prob why,the 205 has 2 bolts that mount horizontally on the side behind where the front output is.

Re: trans removal - HELP!!!
What is happening when you jack this unit?Do you have clearance on the main tranny crossmember between frame when jacking?
|
Re: trans removal - HELP!!!
There is no cross member on the tranny it's on the transfer case but there seems to be plenty of clearance. I think it's getting hung up somewhere near the bellhousing and engine but can't say for sure. It has moved out from the block about an inch on the bottom but is hung up on the top. Its not the top of the tranny getting stuck in the floorboard shifter hole. I've tried just about everything I can think of so far. Tomorrow I plan to remove the transfer case so I can try to move the tranny around a little more.

Re: trans removal - HELP!!!
I meant to say transfer case,I would go over everything again, especially bell housing bolts, starter bolts,It's most likely something stupid/overlooked.These things usually come out easy

Re: trans removal - HELP!!!
Tell me about it... It's always something stupid with me :-) I'll post my findings when I figure it out. Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.

Re: trans removal - HELP!!!
First off, hey Toddski, from Howard City... I grew up around the Belding area and went to MCC for a while after High School...
The best tranny jack I've used is my motorcycle jack from harbor freight. If needed, I've used 6x6 or 8x8 blocks for spacers with a taller truck. Much better than letting the trans fall on my chest! |
Re: trans removal - HELP!!!
Do you guys know if there is any reason I should pull any bolts that connect the bell housing to the tranny? I spent a while today trying to figure out what's keeping the tranny from coming out but no luck. I didn't take the transfer case off yet and hope to avoid doing that after looking at it further today.
Thanks for the tip on the motorcycle lift PPMT, I don't have one but I can see your point. |

Here is a photo that shows the bolts connecting the trans to the block, 3 per side, 6 total. It is held in place by two pins to, it has to come straight back about 3/4" before dropping. If you let it sag it can bind up. I assume you have the torque converter unbolted too?
|
Re: trans removal - HELP!!!
Toddski, If I follow this right you have removed the 4 bolts that bolt the 465 to the bellhousing, you dont need to remove the 6 holding the bellhousing to the back of the motor. Sounds to me like you might be getting a bind in the clutch fork and throwout bearing. These can bind on the output shaft from the tranny if not pulled out straight usually you will feel a springing type bind (if that makes sense), but pulling the case and tranny out as one piece you may not feel that. If the fork is still in the bellhousing take it out, pop it off the fork ball (there may be a clip) and pull the fork out the side. The tranny and case should then come back.
If this is whats binding. |
