Help...new fuel pump not working...
 

I am not sure if I installed it right or not, but it doesn't pump the gas at all. Unless my fuel lines are blocked. Can anyone send me pictures of an install.

did you remember to push the rod up before you stick the tab in? (dont know the proper names) just a thought. The shaft can be mushroomed and can be replace at advance auto. ---Andy

Well, I took the pump off today and tried to feel for a rod, but can't feel one. All I feel is a rounded piece inside there.

you can get a bad new pump

i have bought bad new parts plenty of times

my wife got towed home two weeks ago. i go out and try to start car. no go.

has gas so i figure it's the fuel pump. right..

i go buy a 300.00 pump. jack it up, laying there hating the world. knock on the tank to try to tell how heavy it's going to be right.. sounds like a drum.. hollow?

gas Gage says 1/4 tank?

pour 1 1/2 gal's of gas in start's right up..:whine: :whine:

i drove my wife to work all week :help:

Yeah I will probably just go buy a new pump, but is there suppose to be a rod inside where the pump installs? And what is the proper procedure to install?

That rounded piece is the rod. its a pain to move back up. If you can find someone with a narrow finger to hold it up. I used needle nose pliers to slide it up as far as i can. then i stuck my finger under it, slid it up as far as i can.had a buddy add "sealant to the gasket on the pump" Then I slid the tab under my finger as far as it would go. WITH A QUICK ACTION yanked my finger out and the rod landed on top of the tab. then bolt it up and add the lines and your good to go. ---Andy

Oh okay, the rounded piece is the rod. So the tab on the pump goes under the rounded rod.

yeah, but I didnt realize you had a 292. Hopefully they are the same as my 350. It took a few tries but 3rd time was a charm :barf: ---Andy

Ahhh, I am going out to the garage to try it right now. Will post my findings. Thank a bunch Andy.

Okay, I cannot get the tab under the rounded "rod" at all. I cannot move the rounded rod with my finger, it won't move. I am missing something.

sounds liek the rod is in the pump spot it will take some effort easy way might be to turn engine by hand stil rod is in the up position. just my .02

Okay so if I have the pump removed, turn the crank by hand, check to see if the "rod" has moved enough to get the pump in correctly. Is this right?

sorry i was sleeping :lol:

yes that rod run's on a cam lobe just like the lifters.
so if you keep pressure up on the rod and rotate the engine you can get the rod on the low spot of the lobe which will make installing the pump about 85% easyer :metal:

I dunno if you got the rod up yet, but it would be easier to pick up the rod with needle nose pliers. If you drop it youll hear a noise that sounds like dropping a marble from 1 inch off the table. It gets a little time but youll get it. (watch out they are usually brass and can be scarred easily. ---Andy

as far as i know there is no fuel pump rod on 6cyl engines the pump lever runs directly off the eccentric on the camshaft/ it should go on top the eccentric for proper operation

this shows the importance of having and reading a service manual// these guys will talk till they're blue in the face about the rod that doesn/t exist for the 6cyl fuel pump

I just put my pump back in a couple of weeks ago.
I renewed both of the gaskets.
I got everything ready to put the pump back on and just before I started I covered the pin with grease and shove it up the hole. It stayed in place just long enough to get the pump in. Worked pretty good.
If you do decide to reach in there with a pair of plyers or a screwdriver, don´t scratch the pin.

I agree with cdowns. I don't believe 6 cylinders have a fuel pump rod. That "bump" you feel is the cam lobe.
