need help with primer
 

hello im getting a used fender for my 69 chevy and im planing on taking it down to bare metal and use rust-oleum primer. i dont know if this primer is good to use or not.

i was told not to huse rust-oleum bacause it might wrinkle under an oil based paint

no rustoleum is not what it used to be years ago- it is just another "consumer friendly " oil based primer get some POR 15 or go to napa and ask them.

If you're intending to overcoat it, then I'd recommend a good epoxy primer. I sure wouldn't try to overcoat Rustoleum or POR...

sorry I misread -I thought he was doing the backside, bare metal has to have a epoxy primer

no don't put rustoleum on your fender , use a type of primer that will catylize with a hradner or activator , napa has a good high build two part primer that is awsome !!

Why not rust bullet? Seems easier than POR.

I had a few real bad spot I repaired under the core support and around the windshield and behind the heater core.
Ordered, read the instructions and followed them with Rust Bullet. It covered up just fine with the paint.
I am sold on it and will continue to use it.
Pretty amazing reviews of this stuff compared to other products.

what i was planing to do was primer the fender and wait a year and and then paint my whole truck.

My suggestion then is a primer/sealer - keep in mind that primer is porous - if you put standard primer on there it will be rusted in much less than a year.

I've had really good results with PPG DPLF primer; it can be applied over bare metal and it's a primer/sealer when mixed properly. Then when you're ready to paint - just scuff, surface and paint!

If your going over bare metal..you will want to use a "self etching" primer...

well, i am probably in for a shocker. i just sanded down an inner fender with a ROS, then used Rustoleum's "rusty metal" primer (the brown stuff), then topcoated it with Rustoleum satin Black. I only did the side exposed to the engine bay, and it looks pretty damned good (it's only going to be like this for 1-2 years), so ...

Meh. I know nothing about paint. Maybe this is good enough, maybe it ain't. I don't have the resources or know-how to know what to use and how. I just know it looks good now, and it should fend off rust till I can paint it professionally.

Hey, in the end - anything that keeps stuff from rusting is goodness. :)
