Help me pick a cam
Ok so I'm swapping the 350 in my 2wd K5 for the 454 from the other truck I just bought next weekend and I figured I'd at least put a cam in the 454 and 350 while I had them out.
the 454 will be in used in the 2wd blazer thats mainly used on the weekends and I'd like to get as much out of the motor (stock) as I can and still have the power brakes etc... work well. The 350 will be in my 3/4 ton 4wd that will pull a small trailer and maybe used for plowing snow I know next to nothing about this stuff so I figured I'd ask the experts here, thanks in advance for any input |

I run a comp 268h in my monte carlo and they said it's good for basically stock motor as far as cabr, intake, headers and convertor goes, but it has a nice lopey idle and good performance too. I like it.
However I should have went bigger like the magnum 270 or the next one up since they say aftermarket carb, intake, headers, and converot r which I have all of the above now. Some of the small block cam shafts said rough idle in small blocks and noticeable lope in big blocks. So I think the 268 would be a great all around cam for either one, especially if you'd like to have that camm'd up sound in them. |

For the 350, go with an RV cam since you are planning on pushing and pulling with it. This will give you the low end torque you will need.

Everyone has their own preference as far as brands and grinds that they use. Mine is Competition Cams 268 High Energy. It has a good idle works well with power brakes and A/C.
It is a good cam for a pretty much stock engine and will give you a strong bottom end and midrange which is what you need in a truck. It is easy to overcam an engine and hurt it's performance rather than help it. You want to avoid the long duration cams with a lot of overlap in an otherwise stock engine. This particular grind is perfect for a truck with a pretty much stock engine. Headers, a dual plane intake manifold such as an Edelbrock Performer, and the right carb will wake up a stock engine. Agree with any version of the 268. Its the only thing my dad will put in a street use motor, almost invariably on the application.
IMO its the perfect cam for the street: enough that Everyone knows it is def not stock, and not too much that it sacrifices vaccuum. Win/Win if you ask me. $.02 |

I have run the 280 Magnum cam that you are talking about. It is an awesome camshaft! You have to build that motor up a little bit to take full advantage of the cam's potential though. It has a long duration and quite a bit of overlap hence the very rough idle that it has.
You either need a stall converter or a manual trans with that one because it idles between 850-900 r.p.m. and it has a very rough aggressive idle at that. It is a very bad ass sounding cam and I liked the one that I used to have in my 82 when I had it years ago. My engine was built around that particular cam though (higher compression pistons and ported and polished heads). For a stocker a 268 would be a much better choice, but I wouldn't go past a 270 at most. Just my honest opinion. ...Joe |

Yea that's the same one I got I bought the cam and lifter set for $168 but after about a year one lifter started ticking, and I heard from alot of people comp had a bad run the last year or two ago with bad lifters. I changed them out for a pretty much stock replacement set and they've laster about a year now without ticking any at all.

Any opinions on this? Desktop dyno show a pretty good increase and can still use it on stock components

Are we picking for the Blazer 454 or the pickup 350 or both?
350 = 268 advertised with around 450 lift is good for a mild motor. I love the competition 268, if you are more into pulling, you may want to drop down to around 260 advertised (RV cam) 454 = 280 advertised with around 520 lift is good for a stock 454. A 268 in a 454 is going to be REALLY mild. The Lunati you listed looks pretty good. |
