Swing away tire carrier parts
So if I remove the tire carrier, which I assume is factory judging by pictures I have seen, what parts do I need to make sure I remove so I could put it back on later if I decide to reuse it or give it to someone else?

Re: Swing away tire carrier parts
The inner brackets that go inside the bed area that the swing away bolts to. You will find several swing aways for sale at times that don't have those brackets. The most important parts

Re: Swing away tire carrier parts
There are some parts up inside the bed wall. You'll probably need to remove the tail light housing to get to it. The upper one should have a long rod attached to it. The one on the bottom should be easy to remove. They should have some soft gaskets between them and the bed wall. If you don't pull them out, they may fall out at the wrong time - like on the road.

Here is what the parts look like - I found a NOS tire carrier in Dallas, TX and had him ship it to me...
Hope that helps. I have a picture of the instructions (folded in these pictures) as well somewhere... |

I do see one part that I didn't have though - the square with the rod attached to it. What is that one for? |

Bouncy - I got the parts from Brian - and you are correct it did not include the square piece with the rod...
here is the (suggestions) instruction sheet that may help show where it goes. I sold the NOS one I found on the forum here...but got a picture of the kit before sending it on... |

Re: Swing away tire carrier parts
I don't think there ever was a factory swing-away. May have been dealer installed. Mine is just like the one in the pics and I got it back in '90. It has the same one can carrier on the passenger side. Even then they had been discontinued, mine was found covered in dust in the back of a warehouse. I think Bestop was manufacturer on the one I have.

Re: Swing away tire carrier parts
My truck has one too. It isn't listed on the SPID. I always assumed these were dealer installed and aftermarket. Mine doesn't have a jerry can mount and it's painted the body color.

Re: Swing away tire carrier parts
Thanks for all of the help; I got most of it out this last weekend when I had to do some sheetmetal work on the rear quarter. I don't think mine has the jerry can rack though:confused:
