Under Coating
Who ever the idiot was who decide that undercoating a vehicle was good is not on my good side right now. After finally getting the nuts and bolts off the frame and getting all the grease off I am now having to remove all the undercoating off the frame. A royal pain in the ass if you ask me.

Re: Under Coating
A p.i.t.a. for sure, but that may be why you have a good frame left to work with!!!!!!!!;)

Re: Under Coating
I don't have to worry about anymore rust coming, because the bottom of my truck looks worse than the inside of an oil tanker...

Re: Under Coating
for a california truck it was a waste of money to undercoat it. Heck I don't even undercoat vehicles in the midwest where they believe in SALT on the roads during the winter

Re: Under Coating
As soon as suspension gets taken care of, undercoating is going on THICK! I dont care if its hard to take off, atleast the nuts and bolts wont be fuzed together from rust.

using stainless fasteners solves that problem |
Re: Under Coating
all the undercoating does is hold in moisture. everyplace that there was a chip in it there is rust formations.

Re: Under Coating
I agree with willis0107, in temperate climates where they don't use salt on the roads it's really not necessary. I like to see what condition the metal is at all times and a poorly installed undercoating will hide a lot of the rust if the metal wasn't prepared properly.
I have a thin layer on my 68 gmc under the fenders that I'm going to remove and recoat them with a good coat of POR 15 or similar. |
Re: Under Coating
living in Pa and always building cars I see a TON of under coating!!!! What I found that works great is get a spray bottle or bug sprayer and fill it with kerosene.. Spray some on in the morning then afternoon then evening.. DONT touch it.. Let it soak!! Repeat this process for 2 to 3 days then hit it with a scraper.. It will fall right off.... This is a really clean method... Alot of guys approach it woth a burnzomatic torch but man it stinks, makes a mess and when that stuff starts to melt off it always finds your skin.... :whine:
