68 GMC leaf spring or coil
Hi, Im kind of new to the forum and was wondering if a 68 GMC short stepper would have coil spring or leaf spring suspension. If it is leaf spring, how could i make it coil spring? I am wanting coil spring because i want to bag it.
Thanks |

Re: 68 GMC leaf spring or coil
if it's a GMC then it came stock with a leaf spring set up but could be ordered with coils. chevy's are the opposite
don't know what exactly would need to be done to convert from leaf to coil but i'm sure someone else on here will tell ya |

Re: 68 GMC leaf spring or coil
the trailing arms, a pan hard bar and mounts, the coil springs, the shock brace, convert the rear axle for coil mounts....and probably a few other things I'm forgetting.
or...buy a coil spring frame/parts truck and just swap it over. |

Re: 68 GMC leaf spring or coil
In that year GMC's came with leaf springs standard. I'm not sure about special orders though. My 68 has them.
I also believe that they're less hassle than the coil springs. I have a 69 Chevy with coils and the 68 with springs and really don't notice much difference in the ride. There are those, however, that prefer the coils in the rear. |
Re: 68 GMC leaf spring or coil
Uhhh, the easiest way to know for sure involves getting down on at least one knee and looking underneath. You could look at the SPID on the glovebox door, but looking at the rear end setup is the surest way.
