Saddle Gas Tanks - Worth Anything?
 

Just pulled the two side tanks off my 71 Custom Camper. They are relatively clean, surprisingly, and I was wondering your thoughts on how to dispose? Are they worth selling?

I threw mine away some years ago, long before I found this board. I wish I hadn't. Not sure of their worth. What kind of shape are they in?

They are in good shape. There may be some rust but nothing that a little tank seal won't take care of. Like I mentioned I was surprised by how clean they are; bodes well for the remainder of the truck :).

Put $150. on the pair and stick them in Craigslist--take the first offer. They are kind of neat but not at $3.35 a gallon. Huck

Most of the one's I've seen had long bolts that actually fit through tubes designed into the tanks. Bittgest issue is that they were untreated steel and would rust inside as well as holding dirt on top. They were available as a factory option with a switch on the floor by the drivers seat and a switch on the dash to change from reading in cab tank to aux tanks.
I prefer a blazer type setup with it mounted between the frame where the spare mounts. MUCH safer and also gives you better traction.

70CST - they do mount with a bolt all the way thru. Huck is correct on their position outside the frame rails.

If you have any of the switches in working order I'd be interested in those. Already have a set of tanks to get fixed :D

I am debating on removing the switch right now. I capped the two ends and cleaned it up. This was my gramp's truck and as a youngin I can remember looking at that switch and thinking "How cool". I'll let you know.

When I bought my truck the one saddle tank leaked.
I quit using it.
Then I wanted to use it again.
I got it off the truck (long story, you CA guys got it easy for removing old metal things from cars).

I took it to a radiator shop that also cleans and seals gas tanks. They said that because of how these tanks are built, they are VERY repairable. They are made of plate steel, can be boiled out, soldered up, fixed.

To make a long story short, they don't go "bad" and usually somebody is looking for one or a pair.

And a pair from southern CA probably look like they did when installed.
