door panel idea

My 36 year old door panels were showing their age so I decided to refinnish them. Have not seen anyone do this so I thought I would put it up. Of course my truck is just a weekend playtoy so I dont care if it looks perfect or not, just as long as it looks better than before!
heres the pics, cost me a total of 16 bucks....$4 for epoxy, $6 for the black vynal dye $3 for the leather crap 1/2 off from fabric store and $3 for the foam 1/2 off at store.

Definitely a 100% improvement! I know this is going to sound crazy, but you can take some very fine steel wool and lighty "wet sand" the vinyl dye on the grain areas of the of the panel, it will dull it out just enough to look almost exactly like the factory plastic finish on the door panels. It just takes that shiny sheen off of it. Either way, look much better!;)

about the socks: its saturday!! im too lazy to try and match socks.
for the dye, I just used the autozone stuff, used it before and it works really well. 67-C 30, Ill try to get some steel woll, I think it would look better loss glossy.

What about a clear coat spray. I would think that would help on the wear and tear. Do they make a clear coat spray that isn't glossy?

here is my refresh job. http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...s/truck008.jpg no clear on it as it tended to fog it.

Re: door panel idea

You're right, it is intended to be fogged.

The satin clearcoat may be a good idea, but PLEASE make sure you paint something else with the dye, let it dry, and then try it first. A lot of the newer higher quality vinyl dyes and spray paints have a lot of enamel in the mixture, and they will react like wrinkle finish paint when recoated after they have dried. Duplicolor paints are especially bad about this. It will look a lot worse with the dye all cracked up and blistered so I'd try it on a test piece to make sure it the satin clear doesn't react with the dye. If you do go with the clear, it will work best if you hold the can 12-14 inches away and fog the panels with several lights coats.

Nice work, always better to upgrade what you have already especially for cheap.

I have 2 offwhite deluxe 72 door panels I cleaned up and painted grey and I also have one stock black deluxe door panel from passenger door........are these desireable or should I just hang onto them??

Thanks for the ideas with the door panels.
