Re: 5.3 cam swap from car craft
Very cool read, and thanks for sharing this - I totally missed it.
The only crappy thing is, the cost of these engines just went up $1000 after that article ;) |
Re: 5.3 cam swap from car craft
Thanks Mike.

Re: 5.3 cam swap from car craft
Thanks for posting that, and I wonder if the 5.3 made that much power the 4.8 should be not to far behind it. Unless there is something very different that the smaller engine can't accept that the 5.3 can there might be some hidden potential in it. The mods they used in the article made some serious power no doubt.
There is a complete 4.8 near the house at a wrecking yard, out of a tahoe and they want $700 for it. Tempting. |
Re: 5.3 cam swap from car craft
For $700 you should be able to buy a decent 5.3. I guess the the smaller one would respond to the cam, but maybe not as well. In a 5.3 I'd just do the cam and not as agressive as this one. The head work is pretty spendy for the little bit of gain. I hear the 6.0 cam in a 5.3 is a great (CHEAP) swap as a lot of guys pull the stock 6.0 cam for a bigger cam so ebay is a good place to look.

Re: 5.3 cam swap from car craft
That might be a sweet setup. The 5.3, 6.0 cam swap, carb and that MSD box for the coils....hummm.
I wonder if I could get 350 hp and decent mileage with this combo. |
Re: 5.3 cam swap from car craft
The only problem is that the 4L60 can't take the abuse. The tranny will need to rebuilt/beefed up as well (with the 120hp increase).

I'd say YES, personally. |
Re: 5.3 cam swap from car craft
That's what I was thinking as well, but I would have to run a non electronic OD trans, don't the 4L60's run off of the ECM's?
Sorry for the hijack, just thinking.... |
Re: 5.3 cam swap from car craft
The newer 6.0L's have 367hp and 380 or so? ft/lbs of torque and GM has even "built" something called "torque management" into the software for the trucks so you can't burn the tranny up. Basically, it's a GM band aid for using a high HP/tq engine with an older "weak" tranny. The 4L60 and 4L80's are great dependable trannys, but they weren't meant for high hp/tq abuse. When they were fist designed the 5.3L only had 290hp and around 310ft lbs of torque. The new 6l60's are a MUCH more stout tranny that can take more hp/tq, the 6.2L is an example :D

Re: 5.3 cam swap from car craft
You could run a 350/400 trans, 5-speed, etc, etc they are all a direct bolt up. A 700r4 would work as well. 400hp with the 6.0 cam is easy!! $50-60 on ebay for the 6.0 cam and $500-600 for the 5.3, then intake and MSD box and you could have an honest 400hp running and driving for about $1500

Re: 5.3 cam swap from car craft
This is a regular occurence for me here on Craigslist: $950 for 68k mile 5.3L with tranny : http://atlanta.craigslist.org/pts/578496574.html
I can't tell you how often they pop up for the combo, less than 70k miles, ready to go, under $1k dollars. |
